Calderwood is a wonderful place for a family meal. The battered torsk has been a favorite choice since I was a child also the beer cheese soup with pop corn sprinkled on top.
My husband and I decided to try this place because I wanted fish fry. When we got there.... there was only one other couple which usually isn't a good sign! We thought we would start off with some appetizers but were told that they were all out of any appetizers so we just ordered our meals. We noticed while waiting for our food that it is so cold in there that you need to leave your coat on and the place is also pretty dark and dingy not to mention way over priced and I have to say that Michele E. who also left a review totally hit the nail on the head when describing this place! My husband and I will never go back unless this place gets new owners and a major renovation.
One star is generous. If you find this place you are out of Luck. (get it? seriously, go to see it but do not eat. You have to see it to believe it. The owner greets you with a microphone that makes a dummy tell you bad jokes. The atmosphere is what I imagine Ed Geine's house would look like and the smell is similar. The first bad vibe is the abandoned and neglected look to the outside of the building and grounds. Once you step inside it doesn't get any better. What's up with the stinky creepy stuffed animals on the back side of the bar? We made the bad decision to eat there and even when the waitress agreed the one of the meals was bad, (she and the cook tasted it we still were charged full price for it. Totally wrong! Don't believe any review you read about this place. U must go there and experience this for yourself, it will make you appreciate the cleanliness and quality of a downtown Chicago McDonalds. Although I think you will rent McDonald's food for a longer period of time. This place has not seen a cleaning since the owners wife died, my guess about 25 years ago. Take a look at the carpet when you walk in the door, if you dare look down. I can only guess what the kitchen looks like. This is Chef Ramsey's nightmare.
Service was terrible, only a few people in the restaurant and still took 20 minutes to get a drink. Eventually got to order and waited another 45 minutes for food to arrive. Food was average at best and over-priced. Had there been a Taco Bell across the street I probably would have walked out while waiting for food to arrive. Not good, since I hate Taco Bell. Will not be returning, obviously.
