Chateauneuf du Peuple - Lyon

We loved this quaint spot. The owner was attentive and so knowledgeable. We sampled a few wines and quickly discovered one we loved. The owner provided a beautiful cheese sampler that paired perfectly. The place is comfortable and artsy without being overstated or snobby. I wish we lived near here as this would be a regular place for us.

Delicious casual moment at Chateauneuf Du Peuple - friendly service, great wine and delicious bites await anyone who wants to call by. The bar has a friendly, relaxed and casual vibe and is just on the edge of tourist central in Vieux Lyon. When we were there we enjoyed a delicious platter with oysters, whole smoked mackerel and smoked salmon. All delicious.

Had two lovely evenings here tasting some very enjoyable wine and had a platter with huge smoked mozzarella, sun dried tomatoes and some fresh crusty bread. The guy who runs it does so single handed, it was nicely busy on both Friday evenings we had opportunity to visit with a little light jazz music playing in the background. Very pleasant to sit chat and people watch. Meanwhile the genial host provides samples of wines for you to taste and select what you would like a full glass of at €5 a go. Highly recommended laid back and fun place to spend an evening. Will definitely return next time we're in Lyon.

There is no real wine list except for a few bottles on a rack with the prices marked on them. The food menu is a couple items written on a blackboard. In fact on the first night the host/owner apologised profusely for not having food to serve as he hadn't had the time to sort any out. However, he had some bread and cheese and he'd give us those for free to go with our wine. Having had rather too much of Lyon's traditional bouchon cuisine the previous day I was still suffering from indigestion so was very relaxed about just having a glass of wine and a snack. The enthusiasm and knowledge of the only staff member was so infectious that an excellent evening ensued. Delightful bread, cheese and wine ensured we went back another night - so two out of our four nights in the city. Not haute cuisine. Not fine wines. Just decent food. Thoroughly enjoyable and drinkable wine. A delightful host. What more can one ask for?

We stumbled upon this great place and had such a lovely time! The owner gave us the opportunity to try some wonderful wines before having the whole glass and the cheese board was phenomenonal! A perfect spot for catching up with friends or developing a budding romance. A must try when in Lyon!
