Ignore the poor reviews, the food is very good quality and great value (large portions and reasonable prices). Glad to travel out from Funchal and enjoy the views as well.
Played here today, the course is great, challenging but Robert Trent Jones course it’s expected. Huge changes in elevation. Greens were fine but fairways and tees poor. Lots of weeds. It didn’t detract from the experience, the views are spectacular and the layout fantastic. The lady in reception was very helpful and the waitress was pleasant too. The food was awful, undercooked chips which were bendy and greasy, the burger was ok but all the fat and blood had leaked into the bun. In summary go play the golf there, have a beer, just don’t eat there, sorry.
Good cooking and service insides/outsides. Very fine views and walks (also if you are not a golfer). Avoid foggy days!
We have had a great time in Madeira at the Porto Bay Serra Golf. This is a superb place to stay to enjoy the island at its best, meeting the local folk and being part of the community. If you enjoy golf and walking Santo de Serra is ideal place to head for, just a little cooler then the coast, but clear clean air. The hotel is inspirational in its design, almost colonial, painted a delightful duck egg blue, it has to be seen to appreciate to its beauty. From what we have been told, it was the original club house for the golf course only 15 minutes’ walk away. Golfers can house clubs and equipment in the stores at the hotel and book a free shuttle to the play the championship 27 hole course. The views are delightful looking out over the sea and mountains which surround the course, watch the occasional plane flying low to land at the airport.
