Only go for the fresh Chinese egg rolls (dan guen). This location makes them the best. The gan guen is a subtly sweet, light, and crispy roll. These are the best and are unlike any of the Chinese egg rolls that you buy in tin cans. These make great souvenirs for friends and family, because you won’t find these anywhere else. They come in round shaped, hollow, plain flavour or at flat and filled with coconut and sesame. We prefer the hollow plain ones. But you should be warned that 1. the service is awful, and 2. in the summer months, they get orders for cases of these things so you might not even be able to buy it if you want.
Mini egg!. The smell of mini eggs is worth the detour to Market Village. They are quite delicious too.
Always Fresh. Every time I go to the Tung Tung Dan Quen at Pacific Mall, despite the time or day, they always make a fresh batch of 'dan quen ' and/ or 'dan dan '. I 've tried many other places, but I 've always retured to Tung Tung because their mixture is to my liking. It 's not overly sweet or has that doughy taste.
Great food, bad service. The famous egg rolls 'daan kuen ' : excellent! note: this is NOT the deep fried egg rolls we have in american chinese restaurants. this is the empty shell baked egg rolls that 's eaten as snack, as in tea time. <br/ <br/ there are more than one variety of egg rolls; the other kind is called 'fung wong kuen ', meaning it 's rolled flattened like a cracker, instead of like a hallow cylinder as the regular 'daan kuen ' are, and it has fillings such as coconut shreds, pork sung processed, dried, flavored, shredded pork , or seaweed they may NOT be offering all these kinds, but they do sell 'fung wong kuen '. but since i 'm the original egg roll fan, i hardly get the other kind.<br/ <br/ the next famous from the store 'little egg ', or 'eggy cake ' as i call it 'gai daan jai ' : not crunchy enough on the outside sometimes either they take it out of the hot plate prematurely, or they let it sit for too long . but the taste is still good, and the consistency perfect. the inside is not filled up like cake, but has a slight 'chewy 'ish ' kind of lining, hallow inside. just how i like it!<br/ <br/ service: varies GREATLY, probably between weekdays and weekends. here are the stories of 3 groups of tourists, patronizing the place at 3 different times, within a 3 month period:<br/ <br/ 1st visit weekend, may or june : there were people working at the store, making egg rolls tirelessly. customer my sister co asked to buy some, was told they couldn 't sell any. all orders were pre ordered and they must reserve at least one day in advance. customer asked to buy just ONE pack, or even one piece, but was declined regardless. customer stressed that the staff wasn 't rude, but was just shocked by the pre order requirement. customer eventually left with none but disappointment.<br/ <br/ 2nd visit weekday, august : customer me approached counter and asked if the few packs on display were for sale, having learned from 1st customer 's experience. lady at counter asked the amount desired; they had about 5 packs on counter and customer wanted 7, so lady turned around to people behind her and asked to fill another two bags. customer paid and left happily w/her 7 packs of egg rolls until a fortnight later she found that they actually routinely offer discounts for 6+ packs, but customer received none somehow.<br/ <br/ 3rd visit weekend, early sept : customer my mom co approached counter, confirming packs on display were for sale, asked for price and was told about discount for 6+ packs, then left to shop for other things, thinking they 'd get the egg rolls on their way out later. minutes later, customer returned and found no more packs on counter. asked to have a few packs and was rudely told off, coz they were busy making the pre ordered ones. basically just a variation of the same story 1st customer was told, but the attitude was very different possibly handled by a different staff . customer left in frustration for such bad customer service; vowed to never go back.<br/ <br/ they actually have a second store situated on the upper level the eateries/food court area in pacific mall. 1st customer went there after being rejected by the market village store; was told politely by the pacific mall store that their oven broke down so they couldn 't make any. 3rd customer went over after being mistreated at the market village store; was also told politely by the pacific mall store that they apologized for inconvenience, but they really could not sell ad hoc in large amount. also, instead of only taking one day advanced order, they said customer could pay for 3 packs up front and come back in half an hour for them. when asked if they could have more than 3 since there were 2 patrons sharing , store lady politely said that they would TRY, but no promises. customer eventually left with 5 packs no discount, of course .<br/ <br/ no doubt their egg rolls are of great quality: they are flavorful yet not over oily like the prepackaged canned ones sold in supermarket; the texture is light and super crunchy eat with a bowl or some sort of container under it if you don 't want to vacuum your floor afterwards , it IS addicting... but if you want to put up with their poor customer service and risk not being treated like a paying customer, then by all means go satisfy your mas0chistic needs and visit the market village store on the weekends. if you have some dignity and want to save what you have left, stay away from this place, esp on the weekends. or at least go to the pacific mall store which seems to have better service. if anyone knows the boss or where he/she is stationed, feel free to forward my comment.<br/ <br/ i hate to see a place w/great food go down because of bad service, but i have boycotted many an eatery for that reason and that reason alone. i 'm not afraid to add one more on my list and i hope other people do the same, so service WILL be improved. amen.<br/ <br/ p.s. the whole complex is IMPOSSIBLE to find parking on the weekends anyway; i don 't even try to go near its 3 mile radius at peak times!
