I arrived at Matsumoto City at 10:45 on a Sunday, only to find out that it was already sold out! This restaurant sells out by 10:00 AM on that day. I had originally wanted to eat sea urchin, but then I remembered hearing about "Sakuranbo" in Ote, known for their "100 Country Eel". It was around 11 o'clock when I arrived at the restaurant, which had 10 parking spots in front. Established in 1920, this renowned restaurant has been selected as one of the top 100 in the area. The interior was clean and quiet, with no background music. There were 10 seats on the first floor and tables on the second floor, making it seem like a larger restaurant with 120 seats. I was greeted by a young woman who served me a cloth squeezed with hot green tea for ¥2,585 (tax included). I perused the menu and decided to try their Kansai-style eel, which was cooked without steaming using a secret sauce passed down through generations. I enjoyed a bowl of udon and mushroom soup, which was served with a lid after about 15 minutes. The dish also came with slices of eel and liver, wasabi, wild vegetables, and pickles from Nagano Prefecture. The liver was tender and flavorful, with the eel being thick and delicious. Sansho and sauce were also available on the table for seasoning. The meal was completed with a hot cup of tea, leaving me completely satisfied with the delicious eel bowl. "Sakuranbo" is among the top 100 famous restaurants in the area, offering a delightful eel bowl in a bright and beautiful setting.
The restaurant had a very serene atmosphere. The food was tasty, but lacked boldness. The pepper sprinkled on top of the eel was a unique touch that gave a surprising kick to the dish. It was a fascinating culinary experience.
I ordered a special medium dish (with liver sauce) for 4895 yen, which included grilled liver. The dish exceeded my expectations as it had a Kansai style grilled flavor, but was not as tough as I had anticipated. The liver was cooked perfectly and had a thick, delicious texture. The price was reasonable considering the portion size. The pickles could benefit from a slightly milder saltiness. The restaurant's answering machine was not working which was a minor inconvenience. Overall, I enjoyed the meal and would consider returning in the future.
