Trattoria Scaffardi is the epitome of what makes Italy wonderful for food. It 's in the middle of nowhere, and if you 're coming from the Milan direction (which we always do), you have to drive through rolling hills to get there. It looks like an old man 's bar from outside, with old men sitting around playing dominos, and the 'restaurant ' part is just a room off to the side of the bar with a few simple tables and chairs, but don 't be fooled or put off, it 's part of its charm. It 's a family-run operation, and everything is home-made. There 's no 'menu ' as such, you sit down and they tell you what they 've got. Typical dishes: gnocco fritto, salumi, ravioli, tagliatelle with ragu, gnocchi gorgonzola, polenta and cinghiale (which is their speciality). For dessert, there 's usually a selection of homemade cakes, including the legendary Nutella cake, which I dream about and pine for for weeks after having eaten there. The wine is delicious, EVERYTHING is delicious. You won 't find fancy presentation or experimental fusion food, just really, really excellent quality homemade dishes. I think there 's a fixed menu price of 25 euros, but that includes everything: antipasto, primo, secondo, vino, dolce, caffe, grappa/amaro etc., and the portions are huge, you 'll never eat it all! Also, the people who run the place are fantastic. Seriously, this is my favourite place to eat on earth (and I 've done a lot of eating), we live an hour and a half from here, and we regularly trek three hours there and back on a Sunday to eat there. I can 't recommend it highly enough! A hundred stars!
