Chinese Jin Dumpling House - Melbourne

Didn't like this place at all. They wouldn't allow you to share the plate of 16 dumplings. I am not sure why! I won't be going back there again. The dumplings were really small and not very tasty.

This rather nice, friendly and unpretentious restaurant is worth a visit if you like dumplings and northern Chinese cuisine. The staff are very helpful and welcoming. The claim to fame seems to be the dumplings which are served in batches of 12 and with three of us dining they disappeared in no time, we ordered 3 different sets and still had room at the end for a traditional main of honey chicken. Prices are very acceptable and there is a good beer and modest wine list again at fair prices. It is not an overly expensive night but great fun with good food. We'd sure return and try other varieties on the menu.

My son and I visited when the neighboring favorite Thai restaurant was closed.The decor was appalling, the fish tank very sad, the menu dirty and worn.Then there was the food - honey chicken and Sweet and sour chicken that were basically the same dish of tiny pieces of over cooked, oily, excessively salty chicken. Only the sauces were different but both very poor. There was a chemical flavor that I could not recognize.The beef on sizzling platter was OK, but the chicken fried rice was very disappointing.We will never return, and would strongly advise others to avoid.

The dumplings here are pretty good - not world beating, but certainly good for a non Asian area. The good thing is that there a lots of different varieties to choose from and the restaurant is clean.

High St, Kew is getting to be quite a major area for Asian cuisine these days and the Chinese Jin Dumpling House is a good addition to the offerings in this street. Dumplings are conquering Melbourne these days and this simply decorated estaurant prepares a very decent selection of dumplings of different varieties- either solo or in soups. Dumplings are best enjoyed in a group (even if its difficult to share soups) so I'd recommend going to this dumpling house with at least a couple of other people.
