I was introduced to Ughur cuisine by my Kyrgyz friend, who loves to visit Dolan Ughur and claims it is very authentic. I had never tried Ughur food before, the closest I could relate to was Mongolian cuisine from my visit to Mongolia years ago. Ughur cuisine is mainly lamb-based, so be prepared if you're looking to eat a variety of lamb dishes. Location: Dolan Ughur is located on Little Lonsdale Street, near the corner of Russell Street. It is a small restaurant that may be easy to miss, as it has a dated look with old paintings and Ughur carpets hanging on the walls, maintaining a traditional atmosphere. Service: The service at Dolan Ughur was very friendly and down-to-earth. The staff created a homely and relaxed atmosphere, which was very pleasant. Menu/Price: - Stir-fried whole chicken pieces with potatoes and capsicum, $29.80 (served with special homemade sauce and noodles) - Cucumber, tomato, and onion with olive oil and vinegar sauce, $6.80 - Buns with minced lamb pieces (x2), $7.80 - Dolan Lamb skewers (x4), $11.80 - Lamb and onion with black pepper in homemade Ughur pastry (lamb pizza), $18.80 Verdict: I dined at Dolan Ughur with 4 people, and we shared all the dishes we ordered. My Kyrgyz friend did the ordering as it is her favorite cuisine and she introduced us to many interesting and tasty dishes. My favorite dish was the lamb pizza, which my friend referred to as a lamb pie. It was incredibly delicious, with flavorful meat and a lightly salty, crunchy pastry. I couldn't get enough of it and highly recommend trying this dish. The lamb skewers were also excellent, with well-seasoned meat that reminded me of the skewers I had in Mongolia. The plate of chicken pieces with potatoes, vegetables, and handmade noodles was another standout dish. The noodles were delicious, and the gravy added great flavor to the whole dish. The buns were tasty as well, but I could only finish half because there was so much food to consume. The small side salad helped break up the heaviness of the meat. Overall, it was a delicious meal that I highly recommend. Visit Dolan Ughur with a group to enjoy more dishes, as the portions are generous.
The Xinjiang/Uyghur cuisine at this restaurant is exceptional. I originally came for the lamb skewers, but was pleasantly surprised by the variety of delicious dishes available.
Delicious Uyghur food! Spicy and tasty. The texture of the hand pulled noodles are springy, chewy and very yummy! Lamb skewers are also a must have! The place could do with a bit of a spruce but a part from that it’s all about the flavour!
Went here for the first time today as we’re always on the lookout for regional cuisine. This place was fantastic! Everything we had was bursting with flavour. Can’t wait to come back and try some other things.<br/ <br/ As I don’t have much to compare it to, I cannot comment on the authenticity of the place. But there were a couple things that pointed towards its authenticity. <br/ <br/ 1) there’s a lot of lamb on the menu. I mean A LOT. If you don’t like lamb, you might not appreciate what this place has to offer. They could certainly have tried to cater to a bigger audience by offering more protein options, but I think the fact that they don’t might be a reflection of the cuisine itself.<br/ <br/ 2) the spicy things are spicy. Don’t order something spicy unless you know you can handle a good strong spice. I didn’t find it annoyingly spicy; I actually appreciate that they hit that level of spice, which is hard to find sometimes.<br/ <br/ 3) they use fatty cuts of lamb. Fat flavour, and unless it is over the top fatty (which this wasn’t), I don’t mind. But again, if this is something that bothers you, be aware.<br/ <br/ We had:<br/ <br/ Spicy hand pulled noodles with lamb. Chewy looong noodles with a ton of flavour in the sauce<br/ Lamb mince pie mild lamb, flaky pastry. Packed with flavour<br/ Lamb skewers I could come back and have a whole meal of about 16 of these. So delicious.<br/ <br/ I will certainly be back to try some of the other offerings.
