Ras Dashen located in Footscray's little Ethiopia, has a cool family atmosphere with lots of groovy Ethiopian dudes and families. The menu is huge but was there with friends so we ordered plenty of beer and a huge sharing platter with various curried meats, rice, vegetable and lentil dishes all to be eaten with two different kinds of Ethiopian bread( a flat bread and a rolled stretchy yogurt based bread). My favourite dish was the spicy dark and spicy Doro Wat chicken curry which included boiled eggs. The manager said they couldn't work out which came first, the chicken or the egg so the included both.
I have enjoyed three meals at Ras Dashen and fully intend to return. Service is helpful and friendly, and the menu offers delicious options for meat-eaters and vegetarians. We enjoyed two shared platters between seven people, eaten with injera. Lovely mix of vegetable dishes, chicken and beef. We leave it to the owner to select dishes, and are never disappointed.
Have tried many other options in Footscray but we keep coming back to Das Rashen. Loveliest people, most delicious food, could sit here all night.Have celebrated many birthdays here.My favourite is that you don't even need to choose from the menu, just let them know of any dietary requirements and you will be presented with a feast to suit!
Ras Dashen, I believe named after the highest mountain in Ethiopia, is a good choice. It's a nothing flashy Fabulous local Footscray restaurant. The restaurant is packed on a Friday night and I'm with friends who hug the owner and order for us - too easy! The Ethiopian food is brought out on a massive platter and caters well for both the vegetarian and non-veggies amongst us! The food was flavorsome without being too spicy. The whole fish was amazing. I have eaten here three times and always had a fabulous evening. It is local, informal multi-cultural eating at it's best - washed down with a beer and very reasonably priced!
