This place looks like a family owned establishment that serves Chinese, Thai, and Vietnamese food.
The food was great! The staff was very nice, kinda a dive but overall a great place!
I'm writing this in response to the review that complained of poor service. Shang Hai is one of our favorite restaurants- we don't eat out a lot, but I love that my small family can get in and out for under $30. I've never had a bad meal here. In fact, it stuns me how attentive the staff is- we ordered egg rolls the last time we were in and our waitress knew to make mine vegetarian. She also made sure that we really wanted egg rolls rather than the fresh summer rolls we usually order. This is a family-owned restaurant, and Tweety, who manages everything, always speaks to us- on the rare occasion my husband and I come in alone, she asks after our son. They're friendly, personable, and make delicious fresh food. Tofu Curry Soup is my standard request. My son always orders shrimp fried rice (it is so wonderfully smoky). I'd often rather cook than eat out, but this is my favorite spot to grab supper (or lunch) out.
DIY BBQ meatball rolls!. The Commercial Appeal (and other) raves about the soup, eggrolls, and Vietnamese menu in particular piqued my interest so I was pleased when a friend suggested we meet up for dinner here. The soup was quite good--I appreciated the hearty amount of veggies in it--and the eggrolls, while not as good as the rave reviews had me hoping they'd be, were good too (I still prefer Pho Hoa Binh's; they're smaller but crispier and spicier, and you can get as many as you like anyway during the lunch buffet). The fruit shakes were a little disappointing--definitely fresh and good, but no better texture-wise than what you'd make with fruit and ice in your blender at home, with large inedible chunks of ice and a sort of watered-down flavor--but not bad (I just wouldn't bother next time). The salted lemonade is interesting, with a kind of brown fermented lemon at the bottom and a refreshing tang. <br/ <br/ The star of the night though was the Vietnamese pork BBQ meatball roll with the Pho-typical (Saigon Le has similar set up with many of their dishes) huge platter of fresh veggies, greens, and herbs, large bowl of hot water, and DIY rice paper set up complete with dipping sauce. The meat was delicious, and as the Commercial Appeal review said it was plenty to feed 2 people. I heartily recommend it and though I take pains to try new dishes every time I go somewhere, I'd find it difficult not to order again if/when we return. Highly recommended--a feast for the multiple senses, sight, smell, touch, and taste. And kind of intimate, romantic for a couples dinner. Loved it. <br/ <br/ I would like to go back anyway to try the larb, as that is a dish you never see in Memphis and when done right is awesome. <br/ <br/ Staff was really friendly and it has a definite low key, locals and family-joint feel to it, which I like. It appears you can BYOB as well--a family that seemed to be celebrating an event came with champagne, balloons, and sheet cake and it was no big deal. I love spots like that.
