It was also off-putting to find the toilet seat up in the women's restroom, especially since it didn’t appear to be freshly cleaned. Additionally, one entire wall was a mirror, which created a strange situation as our table was right next to it—I couldn’t help but notice my reflection in my peripheral vision, and honestly, I don’t want to watch myself eat! On a positive note, the food was quite delightful. We started with salmon sashimi, which was delicious! Then we shared the Beverly Hills and Shrimp Tempura rolls, both of which were excellent. I highly recommend the Beverly Hills roll, which includes cucumber, avocado, tempura shrimp, eel, crab, scallop, white tuna, tuna, flying fish roe, all combined with a special sauce. The staff was friendly and attentive, which I appreciated. My suggestion? Consider getting takeout instead.
I find Midori to be quite charming and excellent. I've visited twice now, and after my most recent trip, I told the chef that it was some of the best sushi and sashimi I’ve ever had. I ordered the sushi and sashimi chef’s special, based on the chef's recommendation, who came out to chat with us before we decided. The variety of tunas, salmon, red snapper, and a few others were incredibly fresh and expertly prepared. The spicy tuna roll in the middle was delightful. My wife opted for a chicken teriyaki bento box, which featured impressive selections and beautiful presentation. Mequon is fortunate to have such a gem tucked away in its midst. Some people may complain about the atmosphere; it's true that it lacks the flashy, high-end feel of a hibachi grill chain or some of the trendy spots downtown. However, it's a small, family-run restaurant where both owners are very friendly and genuinely take pride in their craft of Japanese cuisine. While the ambiance may not be perfect, at least the food shines!
Another couple, my husband and I went here with a $25 restaurant.com certificate before heading for a movie. We arrived first, had a reservation and were seated right away. The decor leaves much to leave desired. The seating and tables make it feel like a diner, and the walls are lime green with some Asian paintings. The cups are also diner-like or pizza hut-like. They are the red hard plastic cups we are paying $25 a person-we can't get glasses? . While waiting for our friends to show up about 10 min. we did not receive any drink service nor menus. We flagged down a server and requested water. They brought the water back and asked if we were ready to order. We stated we had not yet received menus. They brought menus and we reviewed them. They have a pretty limited menu for a sushi place. They have a menu with words and descriptions and a different menu that has pictures of some items. I later wished I had taken a picture of the menu with the pictures on it. It appeared to be so dirty, likely because someone dumped a soda on it and then the carmely color dried all over it. I wanted to wash my hands so badly after touching that menu. How hard is it to reprint another color copy of a word document and replace that menu? One of our friends is a pescatarian that prefers to eat mostly vegetarian tofu dishes . There are almost no veg dish options on this menu, which I found incredibly unusual for a sushi place. There are usually extensive tofu and stir fry vegetable and noodle options. There was maybe 1-2 on this one. The food didn't take too long to come and the service was okay after the initial issues mentioned above. We ordered quite a few dishes to try, but I have to say the rolls were pretty pricey for the size and quality small to average . The crunch roll wasn't crunchy, it had somehow gotten soggy. The tempura was all thick breading. There were only 4 shrimp, the menu said 5. $19 dish the rest was just veg tempura and plain rice. Our other friend has tried sushi all over the city and said he couldn't think of a worse place. At the end after our $25 coupon the total was $90 and we left with an unsatisfied and disappointed feeling.
I want to start by saying that until about a month ago, I frequently visited Midori. The service was generally good, the standard rolls were delicious, and while the atmosphere and decor felt a bit outdated, the place had a certain charm as a small hole-in-the-wall spot. However, something has changed in the last month or two that has led me to take a break from Midori. The staff has been reorganized, and there’s a new sushi chef at the counter. The rolls now contain about half the ingredients they used to, the rice is far from being proper sushi rice and tends to fall apart, and the service has become slower. I’m not quite sure what caused these changes, but they are definitely for the worse! I really hope the owners notice this and restore the quality that once made it great, otherwise, I can’t promise I’ll be returning any time soon.
When I moved to Wisconsin from Austin, TX, my two main concerns were 1) finding a good hairdresser and 2) finding a good sushi restaurant. So far, I've tried sushi at three different places in Milwaukee area, and one of them is Midori. We've been going there for the past 3 years, and every single time it has been a wonderful experience. We've also taken friends and family to this restaurant on several occasions, and it has been a hit with everyone! Here are some of the dishes that I absolutely love at Midori: Soft Shell Crab roll $13): It's crunchy and has enough spice to it. I love that it's warm, so it creates a nice contrast to the raw fish sushi. 5 out of 5! Seaweed salad $5): Fresh and delicious! My only complaint is the price: $5.00 for what seems to be 2 tablespoonfuls is a little pricey in my opinion. Thus, it's 4 out of 5. Miso soup $2.50): It's miso soup. It's good, if you like miso soup. So, it's 4 out of 5. Special rolls price varies): They are fantastic! I've had most of them, and they are all wonderful. However, if I am not in the mood to try something new, I always go back to Beverly Hills roll $17). It combines cooked and raw sea food, so it gives me a well-balanced variety of different tastes and textures in one roll. If you love salmon, then I would recommend trying their M16 roll. It's wonderful. This category takes all 5 out of possible 5! As far as other dishes go, I have only tried their Chicken Yakisoba noodle dish $15). It was tasty and had good flavors. However, I am a sushi lover and I hardly ever order anything else in restaurants that serve very good sushi. The restaurant is small, but we never had to wait for a table. The service is good. While it may be a little slow for some, I personally don't mind waiting because it's worth it! We got to know the Chef. Apparently, he has been in business for a long time now, and the sushi that he serves is a good reflection of his knowledge, experience, and skills.
