Bay Tree - Mid Sussex

I work from home but had to give rides to my partner and elderly in-law who cannot drive. While they were busy, I stayed at the restaurant and had lunch with a hot drink. I had to bring my work with me and was using my laptop while waiting. About 45 minutes later, someone who appeared to be the owner approached me and said that this is a lunch space, not an office space. He asked me to either purchase more food and have a drink on my table or to vacate the spot. He apologized afterwards and explained that customers were complaining about not being able to find a spot when they saw me not eating or drinking anything. I understand that they are a small business, but I wish they had mentioned this policy when I asked for the WIFI password instead of humiliating me halfway through my visit. If you need to work on a computer for 1-2 hours in Haywards Heath, I would recommend avoiding this cafe and going to Nero or Costa instead.

I have visited this restaurant multiple times. The coffee, toasties, and cakes are delicious. The staff is always very helpful and provides excellent service. I have never been disappointed with anything I have chosen. It is a lovely place to meet up with friends or grab a coffee to go.

I ordered a cheese and ham toastie at this restaurant. When it arrived, I was surprised at how small and thin it was, and it came with only a napkin, no side salad or dressing. The ham and cheese inside were the thinnest I had ever seen. I was disappointed with the portion size considering the price. Using thicker, better bread would make it more satisfying.

Lovely little cafe stopped for cafe and coffee whilst on a shopping trip. Polite staff clean and tidy

Have lunch in The Bay Tree often as it’s a lovely independent family business. A good mixture of rolls, toasties, and paninis…personally love the New Yorker, and kids fav is Chicken, Bacon Cheese and love a bacon roll. Fresh soups always a fav in winter, tomato winning for our family. Lots of lovely cakes to too mint tiffin hubby’s fav and carrot cake my youngest….used as the best to judge other cafe against and still winning. Full coffee, tea, cold drinks and milkshakes available. All plus a friendly service with a smile makes it very popular and our favourite and means we keep returning.
