The cook and the staff were very hospitable despite their limited ability with English, and the quality of the food was excellent, although in the variety limited (especially sushi and sashimi.) the dining room is a small counter (nine seats without windows) in a difficult to locate part of the city. the biggest problem that ruined our food experience was that smoking in a room is allowed, which had no sufficient ventilation. it wasn't what we wanted or expected for the price.
We had a reservation in this restaurant. When we arrived, they saw that we were tourist and said we were to go. we told them we had a reservation. without checking whether we had a reservation, they made a farewell with their hands. we asked why, we confirmed that it was the right restaurant. they just wanted to kick us out. we took a 20-minute taxi ride that wasn't cheap, so when that happened, I was angry. there are many great restaurants in the opposite, but if they are a tourist, they don't waste their time and go here.
They will not find this restaurant on other social media platforms. so prepare for a unique, local, experience. the host/kitchen is very personal and very willing to work with them. in the course of the meal we have divided several laughs. there is approx. 10-12 seats at the switch with the cook and two more private rooms. When my party arrived from 4 we were the first and had most meal times for us before a few appeared. the eating itself was very far-reaching, some of the dishes I had never seen or tried, and there were several that I hoped to appear and they appeared. the Sous cook would come to us after each dish was served to let us know what fish it was from a personal picture catalog of the fish. the most interesting dishes we tried were a tiny Eel court that appeared almost as glazed, along with a progression of 8 different nitriri of fishing that I had never tried. the ultimate highlight was served a bowl of uni (sea urchin) with fishroe. what makes this restaurant unique is the close omakase experience that was quite affordable and available through other restaurant standards. the search for the top restaurants was difficult to search for our late.
I cannot recommend visiting Umi. Don’t confuse with the real 2 Michelin star Umi. We paid 27.000 jpy for mostly poor quality sushi. We had better fish quality in 4.000 jpy sushi places. People are smoking in the restaurant. While preparing sushi, the chef answers phone calls without washing his hands again afterwards and touches the fish after touching his phone. We all know mobile phones are not the most hygienic items. Better avoid this place.
