I've only lived in the area for 2 years and since I'm Italian (
Stopped her for a quick lunch with our daughter. We decided to take the food home as granddaughter was tired amd needed a nap. Hubby had veal sandwich and I had combo Genoa salami and hot capicola combo. Food is home made ...very good bread and great squash soup. Daughter had genoa salami too. Only complaint is sandwich needed more heat and salt and pepper. I added hot sauce and steak spice to sandwich and it was great. I find their food good needs more spice. Soup was delucious and apparently their sausage sandwich is sooo good ut is always sold out!
My daughter took me here as she lives nearby. She loves their soups and hot sausage /meatball sandwiches. I had their hot Capocollo sandwich..on calabrese bread. Very good..but not very spicy. They were out of Genoa salami and my daughter got the last sausage! Restaurant well know and popular. Sandwiches were excellent. Couple next to us had penne and meatballs...huge plate!. You get a big slice of Italian bread with your soup too. They have minestrone soup daily plus one other, today it was delicious pea soup. Lots of seating near window and in the back. Staff very friendly and warm. My daughter has had their cream pasta sauce she said it needs more spices for better flavour. I may try it next time although I love spicy food.
We live close by but never tried Maranello Cafe until now. I have a friend who buys veal sandwiches here whenever she does not feel like cooking dinner and I see a lot of students from nearby Mentor College come here for lunch on schooldays. I wanted to check it out for some time now but my husband is not a fan of Italian cuisine, except pizza, so we never went. When he finally agreed to order food pickup last Sat, I was ready with the menu I found on google. I called to order about 40 mins before closing time. I was a little surprised they did not ask my phone number nor give me a reference order number. My husband, ever-practical, reminded me there is caller ID. Obviously. We walked inside 15 mins later to find everything ready to be packed in brown bags. Interior is nothing fancy, counter seating immediately in front of the glass door, a couple of 2-seater tables to the left, beside the glass front, a few more tables and chairs as you walk inside. The menu boards, three of them, line the left wall with the day’s special written in chalk on a separate blackboard. From where we stood in front of the cash register, we could see more seating at the back. The cafe staff, both the ‘nonna’ (grandma), who I am sure is the cook, and the woman who rang our order, were very pleasant and friendly. We ate as soon as we got home, food was still warm and everything tasted very good. Veal and chicken sandwiches ($5.99 each) were big, cut in half, wrapped in white deli paper—soft Calabrese buns with good amount of fillings inside. Minestrone soup ($3.75) was hearty and delicious. Ricotta cheese & spinach manicotti ($8.50) made with crepes which I read is how it is traditionally done. Glad to know we could indulge in real Italian home-cooking at this little neighbourhood restaurant.Maranello Cafe takes credit, debit or cash. Free parking at the rear of the building, accessible via Mohawk Ave. Open everyday, except Sundays, 11:30AM to 6PM.
