Torre Palazzelle - Modica

I was taken to Torre Palazzelle by my neighbours recently to try the gourmet pizzas. This has to be the most beautiful and atmospheric pizzeria/restaurant I've been to in Sicily. We dined al fresco under a full moon in the courtyard of this converted 17th century castle. Since we were a party of 13, we opted for the Pizza tasting menu which allowed for everyone to have a slice of their 15 varieties of pizza. The flour that is used in the pizza base, bread, etc. is Tumminia which is an ancient, locally grown and milled wheat. This wheat did not bloat you up at all, despite the fact you were sampling many delicious pizzas. The only let down was the service, there were not enough staff and we waited a long time between courses and for the final bill. That is the only negative.

This chic restaurant is within a castle like building 15 mins drive from Modica. We were staying at Il Granaio Agriturismo which is a 5 min walk away so it was a great alternative dinner option (although the food at the agriturismo was brilliant! . We went on a Wed night and it was packed mainly local families it seemed, most who knew the staff were greeted with affection. There was also a large private party going on. Buzzing for mid week! We went for the very affordable pizzeria menu starting at €5! It seemed to be the place to be for pizza as that's what everyone was dining on. There was a tasting menu which we saw others have a group of 3 shared 3 4 pizza with at least 2 different toppings on each half, giving you a taste of several variations. A bargain at €9 each. I had the vegetariana without cheese it was delicious. Great options for veggies vegans. There were no antipastis I could eat as I'm vegan but they did a plate of grilled veg to share for €4 which was incredible. Wine was very affordable too. The a la carte menu is a bit more pricey but I imagine the food is great (the buffet going out for the party was very impressive . A family friendly venue too as several groups were with kids. Would definitely recommend!

Inside rather cold and lacked atmosphere. Not many diners. Opens very late. Food was OK but wouldn't rush back.
