In New Jersey when the dead aren 't voting, they 're usually busy compiling lists of the best restaurants in the state. There are a million of them. On more than a few you can find the Horseneck Tavern, a local joint that 's as solid as they come. A menu that stretches from sandwiches to steaks with a very tasty punctuation of seafood. Service is first rate and my crab cake sandwich will haunt my dreams for weeks. The atmosphere is active but not intrusively so. It 's one of those rare places that could work equally well as an off the radar destination for a business meal or an impromptu sit-down on a first date. Wake the dead, the Horseneck Tavern is a winner. An easy five stars.

I'm giving Horseneck a 5 this time. We've been here a few times before a few years ago. Back then we didn't have the best experiences food-wise. Apps were good but mains, not so much. That said, we came back and wow. From the hostess, Nicole(? To our server, Darren. To the food. Spectacular. Had the best chicken pot pie I ever had (sorry to the wife, hers is good . Darren is such a genuinely nice person. Great conversationalist. It's rare to get treated so well these days, anywhere and the food was really fantastic. We will be back soon.
