Apparently this was one of leonard cohen's old hunting and it's easy to see why given the extensive menu, delicious eating, friendly staff and convenient location. after a morning of shopping and the exploration of the neighboring it really has reached the place.
Beautiful place to discover. the personal is professional and polite. we ordered classic breakfast, which was delicious. we had to try the Russian brot! I was good, almost as good as home we recommend.
We were most impressed with our server a McGill student who took very good care of us during our meal even though the place was bustling and full of hungry customers both inside and on the terrace. Wish we caught her name. Brunch was good... very hearty, delicious and generous servings, like what you would expect at a popular old diner. Our entrees came with choice of bagel or challah. Bagel of course, but on a whim we also ordered one with challah. Loved them both! Lots of old eclectic décor to keep our eyes busy – our booth even had the leather/vinyl ? old bench seats that sagged a bit from decades of wear. Tiny engraved plaques of past customers’ names were stuck onto the antique mirror adorning each booth wall – ours included Leonard Cohen!
I thought this place was fairly solid as far as brunches go, the servings were large, and two meals, two coffees (we had refils) and a glass of juice was 35 before tips. Very reasonable!
I should not add a review for this already well loved place because we might never be able to get a table again. Joking. The place was jumping when we went on a Sunday late morning for brunch. Everything is delicious and fresh. They make...their own hollandaise sauce from scratch for the benedicts. Not the commercially sold ersatz kind. The bread, the bagels, so yummy. Everybody looks happy there, customers and staff. Very pleasant atmosphere and that decor, unmatched mishmash and fun to discover item after item. For example, there is an old dressing table with mirror and drawers painted black that serves as some kind of room divider. You can't help but smile at it all. So the bathrooms are small but hey, they serve the purpose. Bring your sense of humor because Howard at the cash will floor you with laughter. A place where you'll want to go often.
