I used to love watching 'Chuck's Day Off' (I think that's what it was called) so when hotel concierge was able to get a last minute table on Saturday I
I had been curious to visit Garde Manger for a while because of the Chuck Hughes connection, and my wife and I used to watch a lot of Food Network.
This place is in the heart of Old Montreal. It was the first time that my husband and I went there and as I mentioned, the atmosphere, food and service were fine but price wise, it was really a rip off! We couldn’t believe and...still don’t that we paid for an small plate of pasta and exactly small pieces of lobster for We are restaurant maniacs but we never paid this amount of money for those specific dishes in our entire lives…..
The reviews for this place were excellent, so When In Rome'. I was initially very pleased about the set-up. It was quaint, but friendly and tables were well-spaced (given the current circumstances, this was reassuring). I think describing the venue as cosy' would be very...appropriate. Our server, Simone Marette (details from receipt), was excellent. She was very friendly, knowledgeable regarding the menu and very efficient. Great job! Now let's get to the grub. Our table shared the following: Starters of Chicken Cordon Blue Croquettes. I have eaten croquettes many times, but these were amazing. They contained cheese curds, Mornay sauce and gherkins. Best croquettes I have ever eaten. This was the view within our party; Main courses were Me Scallops' with cauliflower, capers, anchovies with butter and garlic. Delicious scallops. They were served chopped up and mixed together with the other ingredients. Most excellent. We also ordered The Squash Agnolotti with lobster, chives and lobster bisque. I mean can these guys get anything wrong; and Dessert was Apple Galette with smoked cheddar crust and cheddar ice cream. Just delicious! We washed it all down with a bottle of Nicolas-Jay Willamette Valley pinot noir wine. Light, but with a lot of nose (I don't know what that means either It is difficult to be descriptive about the food at this restaurant. However, that simply doesn't matter, as it tastes so good. I have been to Montreal on several occasions, I guess I didn't realize just how good the cuisine there is. Totally recommend this place for food, service and atmosphere.
