I was attending an all-day meeting, and wanted a good breakfast to begin my day. The Pantry made it happen! A nice omelet made-to-order, was served without delay. The server and host were friendly and helpful. The price was reasonable as well. Skip the buffet and order from the menu.
The restaurant features a charming 1950s kitchen theme, complete with Julia Childs playing on the TV, stacked rolling pins decorating the back wall, and a creative display of 50s-style dining utensils. This unique atmosphere adds a lot of fun to the experience. On Sunday night, there was only one other couple dining, which made for a very peaceful ambiance. Both the food and service were excellent, although the prices are on the higher side, so it's not the most budget-friendly option.
Next, we stood waiting for at least five minutes without anyone acknowledging us or offering to seat us. Eventually, a harried-looking waiter glanced our way, and we were shown to a table. After quite a while, we managed to order a vodka martini, extra dirty, and a beer. What we got was a very clean martini. I flagged down the waiter, who was busy attending to a large party, and explained that I had ordered a dirty martini, which includes olive brine. He said he’d be back in a few minutes. A little while later, another staff member approached with a glass of lemon juice, which was definitely not what I needed. He laughed awkwardly, as if to say, "Oh my gosh, my night is a disaster, and you should feel sorry for me." Eventually, he left, and after a couple more minutes, another guy came by. Then finally, the first waiter reappeared with a large squeeze bottle of olive brine. At that point, I told him I was fine, but he dramatically exclaimed, "Agh! Do you even care?" It felt like a comedy sketch. I added some olive brine to my martini to lighten the mood. The "confused buffalo wings" were decent, though not exactly perplexing. The scallops were actually quite good – nicely cooked, with perfectly crisp lardons (bacon), soft fried sprouts, and a sweet corn purée. My spouse's steak fries were okay, but the so-called hanger steak was just a thick cut of random sirloin and way too chewy. The fries were good, though. Eventually, after what felt like an eternity, we had to flag down another server to remind them to bring us our dinner. Overall, it was an experience to forget – or maybe just laugh about.
To enhance the atmosphere, they might consider moving away from the Julia Child and retro theme, renaming the restaurant, and creating a warmer, more romantic setting. We often found ourselves enjoying our meals at the Violet Thorn, the adjacent bar, which has a much better ambiance. Additionally, it could be beneficial to partner with TCAN in Natick Center to offer discounts on dinner for patrons who show their ticket stubs. Lastly, some alterations to the exterior of the hotel could help draw more people in from outside.
