I left our dinner last night profoundly disappointed. I have wanted to dine here for awhile. I read an article about the owner chef a couple of years ago, love omekase sushi and based on the reviews was expecting a creative and enjoyable eating experience. I was fully prepared for a huge bill, prices are advertised. We were four people, the only others in the 11 seat restaurant were a young couple who finished shortly after we arrived. There were no other diners (on a bustling busy East Village summer Saturday night. The poor and a little off putting experience began when we walked in (we were 15 minutes early and he greeted us 'I thought you had a 7:45 ' Instead of welcome, glad to see you. It was a birthday celebration, we were there to eat. We ordered the super premium omekase and a bottle of sake. The food we were served consisted of multiple pieces of tuna, a very routine tuna and scallion roll, three unagi, a scallop, a sweet shrimp, a red snapper and a Japanese bass. It was all very very good but too much the same, and way too little food. Nothing, and I mean nothing was truly outstanding or memorable or even photo worthy. Worse yet, I was chastised for not eating my first piece in one bite. I was also chastised for not eating my roll immediately (I was waiting for my husband to get his . Does the chef think that this added to my enjoyment of his food? He should have been kissing my feet for coming, he would have been EMPTY without me last night. When we finished, this man 's only customers he tried to get us to order MORE a la carte. Really? You have nobody else in your establishment, you have four people celebrating a birthday! You are obviously very aware that for over $1000 (Including an included 18% service charge that your diners are leaving still hungry and you shamelessly try to get more money? The meal was capped and could be summed up by the dessert Hershey! (Yuck bars. Not returning.
We will always remember our dinner at New York Sushi Ko as it was truly a great dinner. John Daly and his staff were great hosts, and the food continually amazed us throughout our meal. His preparation of the sushi was precise with a level of nuance that we have not experienced before. One of the Uni preparations was using much warmer rice, making the flavors really amazing. The yuzu and sea salt on the scallop was another taste that danced in our mouths. It is an expensive meal, but one that we have no regrets paying for. We hope to return on future trips to NYC. We highly recommend eating here.
Delicious fresh sushi. We had the omakase premium and it was amazing. Everything was unique and the chef was a very friendly guy who interacts with you as he makes the sushi.
Ranks with the best Sushi spots in New York. I will return.
