I love how walkable the city of Newcastle is... easy walk from my hotel. Love the free museums that allow me to take in the history and culture of this lovely city. A place to enjoy even without tiny tots in tow. I am solo travelling through Europe and took to visiting the city. Friendly staff and really interesting exhibits.
Finally, my husband and I got to visit the discovery museum. I've wanted to for ages but never got round to it. It was great! We picked the best day, the weather was glorious outside so the place was almost empty. We were met at the door by a young fellow called Gary who asked if we wanted an idea of what was included in our visit. He was lovely and very knowledgeable about the exhibits. I can't believe we spent more than 3 hours there and it was free! So many things to see and really interesting. We will definitely go back with our grandchildren, who I hope will appreciate it as much we did. The wealth of history we have in this county is amazing. There seems to be lots of things to appeal to all ages in the museum. I especially loved the references to the previously unsung female heroes from this area. It was eye opening and very educational. My husband loved the huge map of the Tyne from 1929 showing all of the shipbuilding companies surrounded by countryside in that era. Thanks Gary, for pointing out all of the things we might have missed! Also, importantly, the cafe was great and toilets clean and easily accessible. I'm looking forward to visiting again.
Went to the Lego exhibition and it was really enjoyable. The great hall is high up in the Discovery museum.
For us, this place was more than just a museum. We enjoyed our visit, which had free entry or was available for a donation. It’s an amazing experience for children, as they can not only see and touch exhibits but also interact with them. It’s suitable for kids as young as 2, as well as adults up to 35 years old. It’s a perfect spot for a stroll with a stroller, making it accessible for wheelchairs too. Be sure to explore all the way to the end of the third floor and enjoy the science maze! There’s also a local café on-site.
