Ordered 2 entrees and a soup. Everything came out at the same time. The soup was lukewarm, and I 'm being charitable. No straws with the iced teas. No mention of the day 's specials. Fortunately I glanced at the board and saw something we ended up ordering. Server was kind of cold and distant. This isn 't Smarty 's fault, but sitting outside we were amazed at the number of motorcycles, loud motorcycles, driving down main street Sturgis, I mean Niantic. A big F U to the moron who waited on the corner at a red light, right in front of Smarty 's who thought it would be clever to rev his engine at ear splitting levels for over a minute, as he and his chuckle headed buddies had a big har har laugh. I saw one patron put her hands over her ears to save her eardrums, no lie. But in all seriousness, the food was pretty good. The Rhode Island clam chowder, although served lukewarm, was chock full of clams and bacon. It tasted great. The lobster roll was a real nice portion of CT Style lobster hot with butter. It came with a huge pile of perfect French fries. At $16.95, it was a solid value. I went with a basic house salad $5.95) and added on a grilled chicken breast and scallops it ended up costing around $19. The chicken breast was a bargain at $3.95. I held my breath at the price of the scallops $7.95 is a hefty up charge, especially when it applies to three shrimp or 6 scallops. Luckily the scallops were very big, and were exquisitely cooked and seasoned!! So all in all, we had an OK meal, with poor ambience, sketchy service, but pretty good food. A OK seems about fair to me.
I keep torturing myself with this place. I want it to work so bad; and there are glimmers of hope. Every couple of years. Which is a shame. We wanted breakfast, so decided to try the breakfast menu. Six options for breakfast, all the basics. Meals named after neighborhoods in Niantic. Shouldn't take long to make pancakes and omelettes? 32 minutes after sitting we get our food. Way too long for breakfast. Especially with limited menu. Seating is varied with no rhyme or reason- we sat in a sunroom very close to other diners who were awkwardly quiet around each other. buyer beware refills are not free If it weren't for a local bar crowd similar to cheers or unassuming vacationers, I don't know what this place would do. I really want to like this place so much too.....
My family was happy to find this true gem! We wanted a quick bite to eat before the light parade last Saturday evening. Our waitress was a real delight and was happy to accommodate us. The food was so plentiful and delicious! Fried Clams, Homemade Clam Chowder, Fish Chips, Nachos so much more! We can't wait to return! Try it out because you won't be disappointed!
The fried clams I had were good, nice and crispy. The French fries were not too good. The outside patio was nice unfortunately the train tracks block your view of the water. The service was very slow considering it was very slow when I was there.
Lousy service and the owner is downright mean. If you complain about the food she'll yell at you. Several recent complaints on social media. Better restaurants in the area, don't go here. Tried again 7/21/18 Ordered appetizer, ok. Ordered a burger and fries. An hour later, received it and it was cold. Told the waitress to take it off the bill and bring me the bill for what we've had. No apologies from management. No class here, this restaurant sucks.
