La madeleine - Nîmes

We had a rather disappointing lunch here which was a bummer because years ago we ate here times because the salads and main dishes were perfect and the service was friendly. The service was slow and inattentive the meals were inconsistent in...portion and quality (my wife’s salmon filet was tiny compared the neighboring table). Food was unseasoned and bland. Steak Tartar was not very good and was missing capers and other key ingredients. Dessert was ok. Beer and wines were good. Not coming back any more!!!

We ate here June and had an excellent meal. Well cooked, well presented and good service. Excellent value for money!

Worst food so far we had on our vacation in France. Seems like the cook was on vacation too. In our wine glasses were pieces of cork. The fries were soaked with oil and not crispy at all. The burger and the the hash brown...'galette' was edible but not really seasoned. The bull-steak was very chewy and the pepper sauce could not be called sauce, it was warmed up cream with pepper. The restaurant benefits from the location, as there is a good rated restaurant just next to it.

We visited on a January lunchtime. The restaurant is in the centre of town and a good location if you are visiting. The place was quite full but the owner was welcoming and found us a table. My wife chose a salad for a starter...and spare ribs for a main course on the menu du jour. She said they were excellent. I, on the other hand, took a risk with pumpkin soup and steak/frites to follow. The soup, like most French soups lacked flavour and the steak was like shoe leather. Why do so many French restaurants not know how to choose decent cuts of meat? Had I chosen something else, I have no doubt that I would have been better satisfied. The restaurant has a very pleasant atmosphere and the service was excellent.

We had a day in Nimes and at lunch time looked at a number of restaurants and found them either quite expensive or if they did offer a menu of the day, there were no options on the menu. We chose this one as it...did have a well priced menu of the day which offered two choices for both entree and main course we didn’t look at dessert). All four of us had two courses plus wine for euro total which was amazing value. (The two course menu was about euro. )We enjoyed our food. One person had steak and it was not tender but the rest of us had the fish on an artichoke purée accompanied by sweet potato mash and risotto. Quite delicious. The entrees were enjoyable but not exciting. But for the price we had a very good meal and great value. The surrounds were pleasant, in a small street just off the main streets, between Maison Carre and the colosseum. The service was very pleasant and efficient. Can recommend.
