Absolutely lovely, very homely and the food was delicious.

My family and I went here without any expectations and were absolutely impressed and surprised by the quality of our meals. It was steak night our steaks were cooked exactly as we'd requested, blue and rare. The accompanying fries, mushroom sauce, garlic butter and salad were outstanding and complemented the sirloin perfectly. At only $15, the value here is unbeatable one would expect to pay at least $30 for a steak this good in Wellington. Thanks Family Hotel for a great meal, we'll be back!

I made my way to the Family Hotel for a late lunch and to watch the Otago vs Hawkes Bay rugby match. The barman kindly agreed to my request to turn the music down and turn up the volume on the TV. There were several TVs in the bar which was great (although it is meant to be a sports bar) and I enjoyed watching the game. My seafood basket was nice, and came out in good time. Service was prompt and friendly, although for most of the time I was the only patron don't they like their rugby in Otaki? They had Amstel Light on tap (among others) which was great for me. Overall a good experience, but there was the smell of stale beer eminating up from the carpet.
