Like a couple of the previous reviewers, I was staying at the Cartier and was on the prowl for a meal. I decided to check out the local Harvey's location, to see what the fuss was about. In contrast to one review I read, just because it's "fast-food" doesn't mean that it has to crappy food. And, while Harvey's takes the time to allow its patrons to custom build their burgers, it also means that the end product is far more satisfying to the consumer. So, I'll stick with the Harvey's method. The Angus Bacon Cheeseburger was excellent, and being from out of town, I figured I'd try something different to go along with it, so I order the original Poutine. OMG. Gravy and cheese over french fries. Heaven in a bowl. Just fabulous stuff. So, why four stars, instead of five? While the food was great, the overall appearance of the restaurant needs an upgrade. Looks old and run down
Harvey's original hamburgers are a guilty pleasure from my childhood. But often, the "made in front of you" model leads to long line-ups. Not on Elgin. The management must offer good training, because I'm amazed how quickly they process the lunch rush (including teens from Lisgar). No drive-thru, but a handy stop downtown.
Stayed over at Cartier place so a short walk away. First night we were there we decided on take out so I picked up a few original burger with cheese combos. By the time I got back to our suite (5 minutes) the fries were just warm. The burgers were great. The staff was friendly but the restaurant looked like it could use a floor cleaning. It was just after supper rush hour so maybe I caught them at a bad time.
You walk in to what you think is a fast food restaurant only to find out that things are slowed down because EVERY sandwich is made to order in front of your eyes, the same way Subway makes subs. There's a reason fast food has gone to an assembly line approach; to get the customer in and out fast. With only 4 customers in front of me, it took nearly 15 minutes from when I walked in until I walked out of Harvey's. While their grilled chicken sandwich was pretty good, and the hamburger average at best, their sides (french fries and onion rings) were sub par. Not quite fast food. Not quite full-service restaurant. Not quite memorable.
