Duque - Ourense

The staff of this cafe restaurant does not take care of food left overs on tables and floor of the terrace which atttacts a lot of pigeons. These are not afraid to walk and fly among the crowd on the terrace....

This is in the city centre where the are very few actual restaurants. There are lots of bars and cafes but a sit down meal is hard to come by right there. We were hungry so we decided to give it a try, and the menu del dia seemed good value. The food was fine, and it came quickly. I had ensalada mixta and my companion chipirones to start with. These were both good and the bread was very nice. The restaurant itself is in the basement of a bar, and as we sat down we started to notice some odd things. First the large photos of Chinese girls on the walls. A bit strange for a classic spanish restaurant (in terms of the menu anyway). The other really strange thing was that muzak, of the 1980s synthesizer kind, was being played at quite a high volume. This ranged from soft jazz in style to disco to the theme at the end of an officer and a gentleman. It was very weird and entirely inappropriate. We could only think that this all added up to the space having been a Chinese restaurant in a previous incarnation. And theR e was no toilet paper in the loo. That wasn't surreal, just annoying.

We chose the two course menu del día for its good value 10€ each starters we chose were mixed salad and mushrooms with ham, both perfectly acceptable. Main course for both of us was dorada, sea bream, nicely cooked and served with potatoes. There was also a very palatable bottle of house wine between us, all good value. A good choice available 10 dishes for each of the two courses. Meat options were pork or veal and a rather uninspiring lasagne. The restaurant is clean and staff helpful. There is outside seating if you just want a drink; the main dining room is downstairs. Overall a pleasant experience and good value.

Disfruté mucho de un té perfumado con mi purito en este restaurante. La terraza está en un lugar encantador y la atención del camarero fue muy buena.

Service can't be better. good product. prices similar to those in the area.
