Padstow is also known as Padstein' as it seems celebrity chef Rick Stein has taken over the town with his various eating venues and food establishments. We decided not to shell out for a meal at his expensive Seafood Restaurant, but opted instead for a relaxed lunch at Stein's Fish Chips, which offers take away and also has an eat-in section. You may need to ask directions to find the place, as its address of South Quay' is not particularly helpful, and it is located away from the harbour and the majority of restaurants/cafes, though only a short walk. When we arrived there was a short queue, but after only a couple of minutes wait we were seated in a prime position at a high bench looking out the window. This was perfect for the two of us, as all the other seating is at communal tables and was a little cramped. We ordered a Haddock chips and a Plaice chips, both with sides of mushy peas. The food arrived fairly quickly, casually served in cardboard take away boxes. The fish was obviously fresh and well cooked, though I wasn't too keen on the batter, and the chips were under-cooked and too starchy.
If you are going to add your celebrity name to an eating establishment (and Mr Stein seems to have added his name to most of the retail establishments of Padstow, never mind the eateries!)then the punter is going to expect something over the odds. The only thing over the odds at this place was the price.Fish and chips are served in a cardboard container whether you are eating in or taking away. The special offer when we went yesterday was cod, chips, bread and butter and a cup of tea for The cod was one of the smaller ones I have encountered but was pleasant enough. The chips gave the impression of having been sitting there frying/heating for a long time and whilst the chunkier ones at the top of the pile were clearly related to a potato, the ones at the bottom of the cardboard container were shrivelled bits of hard overcooked crisp. The bread came already buttered with two bits of tasteless sliced bread slapped together so you had to eat them as one. Tartar sauce, in most places, comes as an extra at no charge, but this one weighs in at for a little pot of something that was greasy and tasteless and rather below the standard of what you would get at your average chippy. It added nearly to the cost of your special offer. It was half empty when we were there, because of the time of year, but as we ate at the stools perched by the window I am not sure how we would have got in or out if the long packed-in tables that you had to negotiate to get there had actually been occupied. We only went here because of the name and really wished we had gone somewhere else as it would probably have been better value and better food.
