While Tinder lets you explore the Philly dating scene, more importantly, it gives you the opportunity to hunt for great food joints to take all these hot dates (if you 're sexy like me, obviously). My latest venture (aka my new girlfriend) has brought me to South St., the near mythical stretch of road completely littered with worthy food destinations. This place is a little more well known than some of the spots we 've featured so far, but with good reason. Percy St. 's happy hour menu includes something they call BBQ Fries. Look past the innocuous name and you 'll find an appetizer fit to be an entre. I kid you not, girlfriend and I split a single order over a couple of beers and weren 't hungry again for hours. So what makes them special? These fries come heaped with chopped brisket and melty white cheddar. The brisket was perfectly dry rubbed and smoked and the cheddar blended perfectly to elevate it to the next level. Despite being delicious on their own, the fine barkeep also provided us with an assortment of sauces totally unnecessary but welcome nonetheless. They also have a pretty strong bar game with a decent beer selection and some select whiskeys if that 's your thing. Percy St. BBQ on South St. Go there. Get the fries. You 'll be happy.
Tldr: Great barbeque on south street that's slightly on the pricier side. The Mac and cheese was a great option. I think the chopped brisket provides the best bang for buck option! Food! Cause its the most important: I went with friends and we kinda did family style. I tried the Mac and cheese, burnt beans, pork ribs, chopped brisket, and smoked brisket. The Mac and cheese was very good. It wasn't very cheesy, but the top layer was lightly charred giving you a crunchy contrast. The beans had a tinge of spice. I typically am a fan of sweet baked beans so these were just ok. The chopped brisket was savory and felt like a good portion. The smoked brisket was good but the portion was pretty small imo. Enough for one person but $21 is pricey for the serving. The pork ribs were very tender but it seems that they don't sauce their ribs but wait for you to do it. Menu: Given the restaurant, the menu was meat heavy and most dishes that weren't obviously cooked with meat had bits in it. Also, most of the bbq places I've been allow more variety in their amount of food you buy but this place was more structured. Environment: The dining area was full of large picnic like tables that seat 6 however it seemed like it could seat eight comfortably. Staff: our server was great and let us know about the go-tos on the menu. Also, they continually made sure we had water at our table which I appreciated.
Percy Street Barbecue had been on my list for a while, but for some reason or another it just hadn't worked out. I recently dined there for Kathleen D's birthday lunch. As a guest who just showed up, ordered and paid, my experience was a little different. I arrived a little late, but was able to place my order for a mint julep within minutes of arrival. To eat, I shared the biscuits as an appetizer then short ribs with an appetizer portion of mac and cheese as my entrée. Each entrée came with a choice of a side so we opted for fries. It came with coleslaw so unless you really like coleslaw, don't pick that as your side. The biscuits were so hot and fresh. The butter and honey jam melted into the inner depths of the bread so quickly that it's almost like the biscuits were made that way. The short ribs were nice and meaty, and the three BBQ sauces complimented them well. The mac and cheese was tasty, but again mixing in the sauces really took it to the next level. As silly as this sounds, the fries were the total standout; probably as a result of the barbecue spice seasoning. No ketchups or BBQ sauces needed- these fries were that good on their own. From a service standpoint, everything seemed to move along well for group dining. The food was paced well and our beverage needs were met. They will add the gratuity to the check on their end, so that's definitely something to look out for when calculating your own group's bill. I enjoyed my food and had a fine experience. Looking forward to returning in the future.
I love barbecue and needed a reason to have a meal here. My birthday seemed as good an excuse as any. Ahead of my planned visit, I was unsure about my total headcount. You know how things are on busy Saturdays. I informed the restaurant, learned about their $25pp menu for parties over 8, requested an overflow table if necessary to avoid that, etc. etc. Eventually, after some reorganizing at the restaurant, my party of 9 was seated together. We weren 't subject to the special menu because Percy Street doesn 't offer a single vegan item, so one of my friends couldn 't eat at all. I wish they had told me that when I mentioned special diets over the phone. I felt so bad! Backing up a bit. During the whole table shuffle, a friend and I decided to stop by the bar. Before we ordered, the bartender looked us up and down and announced in not-the-nicest tone, I 'm DEFINITELY going to need to see ID from you. This happens to me all the time, but why is it necessary to talk to anyone that way? It 's not, and she knew it when I replied, Well I DEFINITELY have ID. Yikes. Once everyone arrived and was seated, ordering was pretty easy. Several servers assisted with our table and our food promptly arrived all at once, which was appreciated. I had decided on my meal choice with one of my friends several weeks prior. We split the biscuit basket, mac and cheese, and ribs (with a side of seasoned fries).Splitting was absolutely a good choice, since it left room to eat more later in the day. While the food was good, it didn 't blow me away. The crust of the mac and cheese was tasty, but the actual cheese was on the bland side. It needed something extra, like bacon, to jazz it up. I did enjoy the biscuits (we got two each) with the butter. Awesome butter! The ribs were good but far from the best I 've had. We each had four and I felt like I was dousing them in barbecue sauce to enjoy them. It also would 've been great if wet wipes had been provided earlier. We did not order dessert. Percy Street is all-around okay, but not outstanding. It 'll probably be awhile before I return.
As a native Texan, I'm a harsh judge of BBQ. Percy St. is not bad, by any means. It's close enough to what I grew up on to stir up some major nostalgia. However, everything we had was just kind of middle of the road and felt generic. It's worth checking out, and definitely one of the better BBQ joints that we've found in Philly. But, unfortunately, it didn't live up to our (admittedly high) expectations.
