Our stay at Pipestem Resort was much better than we imagined. Breakfast at McKeever Lodge was just what we needed to start our day. Our cabin met all our needs as it was nicely nested in the woods. The team at the Zip line was remarkable. As Santana lead his newly trained crew of Nathan and Stephanie. We enjoyed every moment of all nine zip line rides over the four hour duration. We even participated in a recuse of one of the guests it was nothing serious Nathan was able to use all his training to lead us in pulling a guest and Santana across the line to safety. They never once panic. There are so many safety features, one can only give an A rating for all they put in place, from the designers of the landing and trails, the equipment, and the staff. Also the e bikes were great, the Axe throw was cool, skeet shooting was awesome with some special training on the 12 gauge, laser tag, mini golf, remote control drones, all added to a wonderful two days of relaxation in the peaceful setting in West Virginia. We recommend everyone to visit this wonderland.
I drove solo from Charleston, SC to Dayton, OH to help with the care of a dying family member. On the way back home I thought it would be nice to give myself a quiet retreat for two nights in one of the cabins here. My entire family is from WV and my parents have come yearly for decades. I checked in and found the cabin really comfortable and great. The next morning I wanted to go for a hike and looked at the unreadable map. So I went to the lodge to ask about trails. Not one persons knew anything about the trails or how to get there or to the lake. You are a state park with hiking you may want to require your staff to know something about this. I did find a trail at the nature center and got to hike. Not great but better than nothing. In the evening, around 7:00pm I was relaxing with some quiet music to unwind when someone banged in the door so hard it sound like they were breaking in. I went to the door and asked who was there. They reply was maintenance. I said I didn’t order any maintenance. The man said he was there to reprogram the locks because of the time change three three weeks earlier. Huh?. At 7:00pm at night? With no warning? Who performs maintenance at 7pm at night? Evidently these people. You mean you are so disorganized you couldn’t do this after I left at 10am the next day? Not comforting to have a guy show up at the door to fool with the lock in a stand alone cabin. I called the front desk. Talked to Ashley who represented herself as the resort manager. She could have cared less. Completely clueless and unapologetic. She asked f I wanted to talk to the assistant hotel manager. Then said she was gone. What? So I packed up my things and left by 8:00pm. Driving winding, unfamiliar roads in the darkness was not cool but there was no way I felt safe there. Thank goodness there was a major hotel with a room close by in Princeton. So much for my quiet retreat. I was going to bring my husband next time. Not now.
We have been going here for over 20 years. The staff have always been super nice and never had a problem. The food and service are excellent. However, the website says 24hr coffee and hot chocolate, they say since covid it is no longer available. Also due to COVID, no maid service, also due to COVID, no breakfast buffet, even though restaurants in the area have a buffet. The beds were a little lumpy this time around and the rooms have no refrigerator or microwave. Only the suites we were told. Seems like the services that were not available should have brought the price down some but it did not matter. Seems like more and more places are using the word COVID to replace some of the amenities we once enjoyed but the price stays the same or goes up because of COVID. We will continue to stay here in the future just wanted to let people know that some of the services were missing but price still the same. They are also doing renovations and it gets a little noisy if you are on the 4th floor. Workers start making noise around 7am.
We have come to this state park for years when our kids were small. It was wonderful then and still is today! The amenities at this park are too numerous to list but they have everything horseback riding, golf course, trail walks, both indoor and outdoor pools, tram to lower lodge, etc. They have added a water park for the younger children too. Rooms are very nice; there are some larger rooms that can handle large families in the lodge but wonderful cabins as well. Some have said the rooms are old. Well, if you want fancy rooms that are upgraded every few years, then go to resorts along the beach and pay the exorbitant prices. The indoor pool is large and water warm, which we love. The restaurant is the biggest difference, no buffet thank goodness and the food now is absolutely delicious. The breakfast omelet perfectly cooked. Coffee delicious. Dinners are delicious as well. Had the Parmesan Chicken and it was outstanding with a delicious sauce. This place is such a treat to stay at.
