The staff at Steve's Brasserie were amazing and made our visit even more enjoyable!
This should be easy in the top restaurants in plymouth. I think native think it's just for the inhabitants of the new continental hotel, but it's not. friendly, well managed, cheerful staff, comfortable, well spaced and designed, great service and great eating served...hot! excellent choice of menu from pizzas to the great selection of steaks. and good value for money. we're going back.
My wife and I had been looking forward to our visit to Steve's Brasserie under the New Continental Hotel for several weeks- however, that quickly changed with our arrival. Yes, it's in a basement, and that just about sums it up. Dull decor, featureless lighting,...and, er, a few cheap looking plastic plants here and there. I know that many public places have stripped down ornamentation as a result of but I can honestly say that this restaurant has had zero thought put into its design- and, more importantly, had zero atmosphere. Given that this was the last night of the Eat Out To Help Out' scheme, and a warm bank holiday evening, we were very surprised by the lack of people in the restaurant- just a few tables occupied. I'm a vegetarian, and have been for nearly years, but I'm not a fussy eater (apart from no meat or fish I just like some care, thought and quality ingredients put into my food. I had been looking forward to one of the pizzas- however, the pizza menu had been reduced to a Margherita, with additional toppings of your choice- I expected (as on the online menu) to receive a pizza created by a chef to demonstrate their culinary skills, not a pick'n'mix'. I chose a vegetable curry instead, rather than the bog-standard veggie burger or pasta- the vegetarian alternatives generally found in Plymouth restaurants. Big mistake. The curry consisted of cauliflower florets, a couple of slices of carrot, a few peas and and chickpeas in a watery, flavourless sauce that didn't even have the remotest of bites'. The ingredients must have cost pence. Oh, and a poppadom and very small dish of mango chutney. My wife's pizza was drowned in a mountain of cheese, masking the meat's taste, and which she was (very unusually) unable to finish. OK, this is in crisis times, and restaurants have had to make adjustments. However, we have been in quite a few over the last couple of months, and in every case the staff have bent over backwards to ensure a warm welcome for customers and striven to provide excellent food and service- all of which are going to be extremely important if a restaurant is to survive the economic firestorm now facing the country. Things I don't understand: if the meal had been good, we would have ordered additional drinks (bottle of wine- despite the remarkably short wine list for a hotel restaurant, maybe a brandy, coffee) and dessert. We dropped out after the main course- we did not want to spend any more money here- and we won't be coming back either, so the restaurant's loses out. Why on earth didn't the restauarant make an effort?. Secondly, don't mainstream chefs ever bother to look at recipe books by Jamie, Greens, Ottolenghi, Hugh F-W etc??? Vegetarian food isn't just burgers, pizzas and basic pastas- there's some great stuff out there (I suggest a trip to the superb Cosmic Kitchen for the chef on last night). Service was uninspired- and for the first time ever in a restaurant- when asked the usual, is everything ok (I always say fine I was very politely negative. No response from the waiter, and nothing from the kitchen. I have never, ever written a negative review for a restaurant, but feel so badly let down by Steve's Brasserie that I am driven to post this. Definitely the worst meal experience I can remember (and I'm
