I think the story of this man who has been been serving ice cream for over 50 years is remarkable, but that is the experience. Anyone claiming this is the best ice cream on the island is misguided in my humble opinion or has completely different taste buds to me. I thought the flavours were pretty artificial, but I am willing to be proved wrong. I was not convinced that many melons had been harmed in the making of my ‘melão’. You have to do this, in the same way that you have to come down from Monte in a toboggan, once. In the same way that a high speed trip in a number 20 bus that is running 15 minutes late is far more exhilarating than the toboggan, I found the nearby Italian style ice cream stall far more enjoyable. Again I accept this is totally a matter of personal taste. However, you should stand in the queue, a big part of the experience, meet the proprietor have a ‘duplo’ in a cone. Then go for another ice cream.
The one thing you must do on Porto Santo, have a Lambeca or 2 or 3. expect to queue a lot in the summer months though... The best Ice cream you will have.
A visit to Porto Santo involves a visit to Lambecas to eat the local made icecream. Different flavours everyday, A visit not to be missed.
