This was very luxurious in comparison and still a wonderful setting, however as commented by others sadly the guests seem an inconvenience to the staff and owners. The very high prices would be bearable for the setting, amenities and comfort, but completely undone by the reception. We sat outside for cold drinks as a family when we first arrived and had a very frosty reception from the bar staff. This changed slightly when we said we were staying for the night (our children were given access to games), but there was still very little joy or pleasure from the hosts in sharing their wonderful surroundings.
The refuge is beautifully located but staff incredibly rude and unwelcoming. sadly, reading some other reviews, French and English, they reflect our experience we had with the behaviour of the staff there. we had and incredible unpleasant experience there when we were doing a 9 day hike through the Vanoise with our 7 year old daughter: I washed one of my daughter's T shirts (we packed two T-shirts for her for this trip to cut down on baggage) and hung it up on the one and only washing line available on the terrace. this was early in the morning of a rest day we spent close to the refuge. when we got back late afternoon and couldn't see the T shirt on the washing line I enquired with the two women there (one older one with a blond dyed bob hair cut and a younger waitress with brown hair). they told me they had thrown it away as I hung it on a private washing line!!!!!!! I could not believe my ears! incredible!! when I asked to look in the bin, they told me the bin had been changed and the bag with the T shirt in is now in the village! Apart from feeling outraged by the cheek of it and sad as the t shirt was a recent birthday present for my daughter, it was very inconvenient as we only had one t shirt left for the remainder of the walk. when I complained to the brown haired waitress again a couple of hours later and told her that we will pay for our stay minus the cost of the shirt she disappeared in the kitchen and the man (most probably the boss) came out with T shirt in hand and returned it to us..... honestly, I still can't believe the incredible rudeness of it all, and it certainly was enough to spoil one of our days on the hike. What is wrong the those people?? as you can probably tell I still feel angry. not at all the spirit of the mountains. They should be replaced as they are in the wrong job.
We stayed here on the last night of our trek, and you are really back in civilization. We had a very nice room for our family of four, with shower en suite, but toilets in the corridor. It has a proper dining room and the meal was above standard. So it’s something of a crossover between a hotel and a refuge
Arrived yesterday at the end of the afternoon, the manager came to welcome us and install us. We have been very well informed about the exits to be considered in the snow conditions. A very friendly couple we exchanged well with. Cherries on the cake a good Rousse du Mont Blanc beer waiting for the meal. And what a meal, a good little intake soup and an excellent Tartiflette in addition to that I ended that of the neighbors who calved before the end. The refuge in itself and full of history and simply magnificent what could make us forget that we are in a refuge at almost 2000m altitude and all the logistical problems that this entails. So when I read or heard some comments, don't forget that life up there is not pink every day and that managers do their utmost to welcome us. A little reminder too, the high mountain does not prevent a smile and say hello. For some, you are not surprised to be welcomed coldly when I see that at breakfast we do not respond to morning greetings. Thanks again for the welcome and excellent meal. Olivier
We climbed into the valley and went to this refuge by chance at noon. A very pleasant and attentive welcome. Good dishes and good sizes. A good beer from the corner. And rather logical prices have seen the logistics necessary to make this place of work. It's a good place, but in any case, once you get here, you don't have a choice but to go down to Pralo
