The whole evening was wonderful. highly recommended.
The first course, which included appetizers, was quite tasty. However, two people in our party ordered elk carpaccio, and one ordered french fries while the other did not. One member also inquired about a lime flavor in his dish, but the waiter seemed unaware of the details of the menu and had to repeatedly check back to provide information about our meals. Additionally, the lobster bisque ordered was served cold, so we sent it back; unfortunately, it returned still cold. As for the second course, I wouldn't really consider it a course at all—it was merely grapefruit juice served in a wine glass with a spoon. Our main course featured two guests who ordered filet mignon and lobster, each requesting different cooking temperatures. When we asked the server about their temperatures upon arrival, she replied, "I don’t know." The lobsters were cut in half and attached to the shells, and everything was cold, including my risotto, which was undercooked. The last course, short ribs, was overcooked. When it was time for dessert, which we expected to be a highlight, we were disappointed once more. We received three slices of cheesecake with cold huckleberry compote in the middle of winter, along with a banana cake that was unremarkable. To top it off, we were charged $145 per person, plus the cost of a wine pairing for one member of our party that wasn’t even served with the food. All in all, we found it hard to justify spending that much money here. For better quality and a much more enjoyable experience, we could have gone to Outback Steakhouse, where mistakes are handled with more care.
After spending nearly $450 on dinner for two, we left hungry and ordered bread at Sage 's other restaurant across the street. It was the best thing we had all night. Billed as a chef 's tasting menu, it was really just two small courses and a dessert. One first course was just a small pile of raw, shredded brussel sprouts in a sweet mayonnaise and with raisins. That 's it. Another was a pair of tiny, flavorless oysters on a salty foam structure. Course two was a glass of wine, paired inexplicably with a spoon. Still, we rooted for the dinner to succeed based on the excellent food we 'd previously eaten at the sister restaurant. But the risotto 'main ' came out cold and flavorless. The sauce on the surf and turf was flat and flavorless as well. The filet was good, but tiny (the right size for a true five course menu, not the tiny two course menu Sage served). Overall, the menu lacked salt. And it lacked the kind of refinement and sophistication we expected based on Sage 's reputation and normal menu. We waited 30 mins for dessert. The lava cake was fine. The cheesecake was burned and cracked, and the base reminded the diner more of a store bought oreo pie crust than anything else. I wish they 'd offered the normal menu. It appears from other reviewers this night was a big miss all around. We saw two other diners laugh to each other as their courses came out. They left early. We were looking forward to this meal for a long time. At $145 per person before wine pairings, we left feeling fleeced. This feels like a restaurant that can do so much better. I wish it had.
The New Year's Eve dinner was absolutely perfect! I will definitely return, and the location is truly breathtaking.
