I can't remember ever choosing (or catching) a piece of live seafood anywhere, be it fish, lobster and in this case crab and not been happy with it - it was alive 10 minutes ago and now I'm eating it - its hard for that to fail.. so my expectations were high. Anyway we looked around and everyone in the place was eating fish with noodles - so when in Rome as they say.. we went with the mud crab with ginger and shallot and noodles. The crab flesh was really good, the noodles were perfectly cooked and the sauce was nice and thick with a hint of sweetness. It's pretty good, but if you get the crab it's going to get messy so don't wear your favourite shirt. We also started with a dozen sydney rock oysters - they were ok, but didn't taste of the first freshness and have had better from the other fish market outlets. It's packed so service is a little chaotic, but they work well with the small space they have and manage to get food out in good time. And our waitress found a seat for us immediately- albeit next to a couple that were still eating and told we had their table next! If I was anywhere else in Sydney that would appear rude, but I'm just going to assume that is a customary thing that all parties involved understood. Although the decor says cheap, the food certainly isn't, so bring your credit card.

When I go to the Sydney Fish Markets, I can never turn away from a good classic fried seafood and chips platter. We originally wanted to go to the Fish Market Cafe next to Christie's but boy was the line too long. So we bit the bullet and purchased their basic seafood platter and an aburi scallop. I have had the aburi scallop before and it was good! There was a nice balance of rice, salmon and scallop which all goes well with the melted cheese and mayonnaise. However make sure you grab the ones that came out of the oven recently because it is best eaten freshly baked. One was $5.50. The disappointment was with the seafood platter. The platter included two fish cocktails, fried prawns, fake crab legs and calamari. Most of the platter was not seasoned, apart from the calamari and the fries were soggy with oil. It was also cold. It costed $15.50 which is fair for the amount of food you get but I was disappointed with the quality. twitter.com
The fresh oysters were better than the fried bucket. The cutlets and fish sticks seemed like they were fried long ago and they came pretty soggy and sagged with oil. The oysters were fresh and succulent though. P.S. Try visiting the fish market before 10am if you want to beat the crowd.
