What I can say is that I've had much better steaks elsewhere in the world. But I guess you wouldn't go to Quartu Sant'Elena for that. I didn't have horse, as I don't eat it. I assume these would be the best steaks. I ordered the Angus, but it wasn't available so I had to have the Costata with fries. The meat was fine and the fries were lovely, but I wasn't overly impressed. Dessert was nice too. I'm probably not being very generous with a 3 stars' review, but for a place that serves primarily steak I was expecting the meat to be the star of the evening, whilst it was just OK. Service was friendly and the bill was 26 euros per head, which I believe is on the expensive-ish side for the area.
I went to La Capannina for the second time last night. I do not regret it, but I think it's reputation actually exceeds the overall quality. I guess it is a matter of how used one is to great quality food, or to good restaurants. To sum up my experience, I will rate the place, the service and the food, finally the price. The place is nothing special it is in a tiny street, a bit hard to find unless you know your way around really well. The inside is a bit dim. Newly furbished, but tables are very closed to each other so I can imagine it is hard to get around when the place is full. Overall it seems quite clean. The service is slow. We were immidiatly seated (it was a Thursday night, and we arrived late so there were a lot of empty tables) but had to wait for some good 15 minutes before the waitress arrived to take orders (we actually had to call her attention). She was nice and attentive, but she was the only one there, so this slowed down the whole thing. I am guessing they have more staff at weekends. But there is hardly any reason for such a slow service when the place is not even half full. The food is good. Not excellent. Good. I had the angus beef. I asked that is was cooked medium, but in fact I had it rare. It was ok, tasty and soft but I would have preferred it a bit more cooked. I know I should not make comparisons, but I have been to Argentina and there is no way that this place can compete, not even if it has the same ingredients. My friend had a plain steak with fries, which were not fresh but frozen fries and looked a bit overcooked. We had grilled vegetables and by the look of it (so perfectly cut) those were also frozen. We paid 25 euro each for one plain appetizers (bread and marinated tomatoes); 2 steaks with salad; a serving of grilled vegetable, a small bottle of water and half a liter of house wine. There are places in town where you can have the same amount of food, which is actually of better quality, and spend less than that. I wanted to try it once more, but I don't think I will go again.
If you want to enjoy a lovely steak near the Poetto Beach, surely you have to go to the Capannina. When I am back to Sardinia for my holidays, I always use to visit them and enjoy with one of these amazing steaks. You have a wide choice. The service is good and friendly. You could find easily seats available also in the weekends. Cristian
