The biggest shock to me when I moved to California after growing up in Oklahoma, was that diners and diner food was held in higher regard out here. Where i came from, diner food is an easy staple that you for sure can find in any tiny town. Greasy spoon fare isn't something that will win you any awards, but it's good and filling. It was everywhere where I grew up. When I moved to the land of avacados and burritos, it's one of the first thing I noticed is that diner type food is special to the people out here. It's not on every corner, so they appreciate it and celebrate the type of food. So when I see diners with great reviews, I must admit, I immediately take it with a grain of salt. This is the type of food I've had most of my life and it takes a lot to impress me. Black Bear Diner fits right into this mold. Charming setup that looks like an expanded diner filled with busy waitresses smiling and slinging food and plates all over. The food is greasy, tasty and filling and there's a ton to choose from. We didn't have anything we didn't like, but the food fell right into the category of what's to be expected. The staff looked shorthanded and they all were super nice and professional. We waited a bit, but didn't bother us in the slightest because when we were helped, they made us feel at home. The only food that stood out to me was the chicken fried steak. It tasted very similar to how I had it back home and that's not an easy feat. You didn't even need a knife to cut it. I'm a little jaded when it comes to diners, but I had so many recommendations of this place that I had to try it. The food is great, the staff is fantastic and the place is warm and welcoming. If you enjoy diners, you'll most assuredly love this place. If your like me and grew up on this kind of stuff, it's a good place to scratch up some old memories with food that will definitely trigger some nostalgia.
The #1 Credo was not exercised last night. Now to be fair it was 8:30 pm when we arrived. There was no one in the restaurant except for the server and the cook. The menu is overwhelming! There 's no easy way to say it. It 's kind of pricey to be a 'diner! ' There are way too many options to choose from. As first timers, I ordered the fish and chips and the hubster is ordered the chicken fried steak. Our food was prepared exactly the way we like it. Good....Good..Good!!!! The portion was enough to where I will have leftovers for lunch today. There was one concerning thing I noticed. There was a young boy (probably no older than 10) that was sitting at the counter. He was playing with his toy. He was occasionally loud! Now I understand that times are hard and babysitters are not easy to come by, however, he should not have been over there playing next to the kitchen. I considered it as unsanitary! As for our server, he was knowledgeable about the menu and able to answer our questions (despite the noisy kid playing in the restaurant), as well as make suggestions on the menu items.
Nice place to eat at. last time I was here it was 2016 lol. I got the original French toast but ordered the stuffed blueberry french toast. The same price probably just as good wasn't that big of a deal for me. Thanks
Had a pleasant time here. This is my Niece's favorite spot. She wanted me to eat there. How could I go wrong with a fantastic place that serves breakfast for dinner? My niece ordered her bear pancakes i ordered a Ruben Sandwich! So yummy. The customer service was more than hospitable. He went the distance for our order. We went after A Big St. Patty's day celebration, I'm sure that's why avocado was not available.
The food is delicious and the service was excellent. my only question is that I don't see a good reason for an breakfast to spend the amount of money I've done here. denny’s, ihop and cracker barrel offer in a fraction of the cost equally great tasting. a one-time visit worth, but not a regular or necessary stop my mind.
