My husband and I recently came to Red Deer for the Centre Fest. When choosing a place for our lunch, we decided to go with the best revues. We have to say we were very disappointed with our choice. The menu is very poor with very few options, and printed in such a way that we could barely read it. Everything on the menu was Mexican-style with nothing for children and not very cheap. My husband ordered a taco salad, which was quite good but it only had meat, lettuce and barely any tomatoes. I didn't find anything for myself or children as I'm not into Mexican food. Their coffee is okay but the names of coffee were very distasteful. The stuff was another disappointment. The slim gentleman who served us at the cashier was very cocky and we felt very rushed even that there were no other customers behind us in line. The two people who worked in the kitchen behind him, did not even smile or acknowledged us. The coffee shop is dark and gloomy. We didn't want to eat there but preferred to go and sit on the city patio. Quite a disappointing experience. :(
Cafe Pichilingue is by far the best little resturant in downtown Red Deer. Penny and Juan are always smiling and serve up a great meal whether breakfast or lunch. I have always had a great meal whether it was a breakfast wrap or soup and sandwich. The lounge is always a great spot for a cocktail and to be entertained by Jack. I would recommend this cozy downtown location to everyone.
I was tempted to try this cafe after laughing my way through their online menu. They recommended several sandwiches and I settled on a simple grilled cheese and ham, salsa and Italian soda which rang in at about $14.00.The food came out quick and the grilled cheese was tasty. The salsa was excellent - you could tell this was not scooped out of a jar, it was fresh and delicious!Overall I'd come back. The patio is great for nice summer days.
Passing through on our way to Banff, kids were hungry, pulled off the highway, found downtown and ended up having the BEST meal we had during our entire vacation in Alberta. Service was friendly, outdoor seating was lovely and best of all - The Food! Fresh ingredients, fresh bread, thoughtful combination of flavors, generous portions, awesome value. The kids were pleased and so were the parents. Soup, sandwiches and quesadillas all prepared consistently and well plated. We were impressed and thankful. On this trip through Alberta we found supposedly high rated restaurants serving up totally overpriced, tasteless, poorly prepared, over-thought food. Yeeech!Cafe Pichilingue is a little oasis in an Alberta of awful dining - Don't miss it. Wish we'd had time to attend their live music performances in the back of the house, we noted the line up and a number of well known Alt/Folk singers (such as Chloe Albert) were slated to perform. We feel lucky to have found this place!
