This funky little space hidden away at the back of Central Square Shopping Centre has gone through a number of incarnations to get to where it is today. Even as locals, we tend to forget about it, and yet are blown away by the great food each time we visit. Our latest dining experience was no different. Chicken Parmigiana was a huge serving of quality chicken breast, with a delectable topping, served with delicious beer battered chips. Surf and Turf off of the specials board was a 250gm steak, perfectly cooked to well done (over cooked in my view, but none the less) with an assortment of seafood piled atop, including several large prawns, fresh calamari and a Morton Bay bug. Again, this came out with a helping of the beer battered fries and a creamy garlic sauce. Finally, the slow braised lamb shanks. Two shanks, with tender meat literally falling from the bone, on a bed of smooth mash potato and seasonal vegetables. The restaurant itself is chic in an almost gothic way. It is dark and moody and gives the impression that you're no longer in the suburbs. It is a relatively small space, with two indoor dining areas separated by a bar area. Having booked late, we were the sole diners at the one end, as the room around us was prepared for a private function later in the evening. From prior experience, it can get busy and somewhat cramped in here at times though. There is also a large al-fresco area running the length of the establishment, which would be just the ticket for a relaxed drink before dinner in time permitted. Our wait staff were both very friendly and attentive, looking after us with practised ease. To some, they may have been slightly over familiar, but I like this personal touch myself. All up, four main courses and drinks came to about $120.00, which I felt was exceptional value for money for the quality and quantity of food which we enjoyed. We shall definitely return.
We had to wait 20 minutes to get our first drinks and lunch order whilst the 18yo waitresses talked to each other and ignored us.
First time visit to this newly opened restaurant/cafe/bar in Altona Meadows.
We began our dining experience with drinks and appetizers and were pleasantly surprised by the friendly service and delicious food. This led us to prolong our stay and order more drinks for dinner. We highly recommend this charming spot for a drink or meal, as you will not be disappointed!
