For a true local experience, eating with locals, true local specialties, you need to try Múlakaffi. It's open for lunch and dinner with a break in between but it's worth waiting. They serve selection of different dishes every day. Menu of the day is displayed as well as visible on the board. You choose one main and get coffee/tea, bread, salad bar access and soups to choose from. Place is large but it gets full as the food tastes like a real homemade and looks like the favourite local place for many people. Menu is only in Icelandic but they speak English and are kind to show you what they serve that day so you can choose. Also place is not as pricey as local tourist restaurants so I believe it is a good choice for your consideration. Food is really delicious. Salmon, prune soup, meat soup, onion soup, meat balls, all was amazing. I will be back for sure. Totally worth recommending.
We went here for a dinner when looking for some local casual authentic foods. We were excited although had no idea on what to expect because only found Icelandic version of the menu online. It turned out being wonderful — the restaurant is clean and simplistic, foods were healthy and so fresh, people who worked here were very kind and helpful. I initially wanted to order the fish cheeks as it sounded like the top 1 dish that local would go for, and the girl who helped preparing my food offered me to try it to make sure I will enjoy my food. It was very fresh but a bit too fishy for me, so I switched to lamb, and she provided me two kinds of sauce for me to try with the lamb. They also had soup and salad bar, I got to try the fruity porridge. My husband and I finished all the foods we had ordered and ended up feeling so happy that we decided to take this “adventure”. Highly recommend!
Don't be turned away from this place because it cafeteria style. We have the goulash and the fish in curry sauce. It was a delicious and fast meal! The staff was friendly and helpful. There is also a small salad bar!
If you are looking for a real Icelandic blue collar restaurant that is your place. Very tasteful comfort food in a simple common table with an all-you-can-eat salad bar. Cheap options compared to other Iceland restaurants with an excellent cost-benefit ratio.
