We travelled to Rochdale for the sole purpose of trying Castle Cafe's Challenger breakfast. And we were not disappointed. The place itself is a good honest working men's eatery and the food is of the standard you would want, the challenger breakfast is something else containing eggs, sausages, bacon, hash browns, omlette, fried bread, toast, bread and butter, black pudding, spam, chips, mushrooms and a cup of tea (I've probably missed something. All in all it is 6000 calories and around half a stone in food. Before you receive the food you get a warning that whatever you do is at your own risk and then they serve you the tray full (and I mean full of food. As I said the food is of good quality and tasteful and if you complete the challenger in 1 hour you get it free there were three of us giving it a go (which is not allowed in the challenge, but we knew we wouldn't do it and we made it to about 50% and all felt full for the rest of the day. Best thing going for the cafe though are the people who although they must have thought that a group of nutters driving from London to Rochdale for breakfast were slightly unhinged they were very friendly and didn't seem at all put out that we were more there to say we had done it than to give it a real go. I doubt I will ever try it again as I know I could never manage it but if you think you can I recommend you give it a go just make sure you listen very carefully to the health warning.
I called by on this back street cafe bar off Molesworth Street in Rochdale and ordered the £4.80 breakfast off the menu. For that amount of money I got 2 rashers of thick bacon, 2 perfect fried eggs sunny side up, 2 sausages, a hash brown, slice of black pudding, mushrooms, slice of fried bread, tomatoes and beans, 2 slices of toast and tea or coffee. when the large oval plate arrived, I thought, yummy yummy! I managed to eat it all and was very happy with my food, along with reading a couple of daily newspapers they provided. Its more of a transport cafe and for those hungry drivers passing by, you will surely receive some decent food. I know they do other foods on the menu, too many to mention. Overall, fast and friendly service at a very reasonable price!
The food at this restaurant is fantastic and the staff are wonderful. The new owner is definitely making improvements compared to the previous two. It's disappointing that they received negative comments on Facebook. Don't let that deter you from trying it out.
This restaurant is a nice place to visit when in Rochdale. They serve value for money, honest food. Located just outside the town center off Molesworth Street, you can find the plaque marking Gracie Fields' birthplace nearby, close to the junction with Milnrow Road. There is a dis used car wash in front, as well as a TK Max store and Home Bargains superstore.
