Tanuki - S San Diego

I dined at the restaurant without a reservation on a particularly busy night, and I had an amazing experience! We will definitely be returning, and surprisingly, we enjoyed it even more than our visit to Animae for the same occasion last year. The food was exceptional! Although it took a while for our dishes to arrive and one staff member appeared to be overwhelmed by the wait, it did not take away from our overall enjoyment. The food was genuinely delicious and even better than our meal at Animae. We're really looking forward to our next visit!

The fish at this restaurant is exceptionally fresh and tasty. Each dish bursts with flavor and features wonderful textures and contrasts. Food rating: 5/5.

I visited this restaurant for the first time because my son was feeling a bit under the weather and wanted some miso soup. I called ahead and ordered two soups, and I have to say, everything was delicious! When I got there, the restaurant was clean and well-kept, and the restroom was also in good condition. Additionally, there was ample parking available!

What seemed promising ultimately fell flat. Although our server was great, the restaurant itself is nothing special. The atmosphere feels like it could be in a strip mall and the food lacked flavor. We tried the agedashi tofu (tasted bland), the teriyaki chicken (almost inedibly dry), and two sushi rolls. Sadly not one dish was even slightly remarkable. The best part of the experience was getting to choose our own sake cup from an eclectic selection.For the prices especially (but even if it were cheap), this is a definite skip.
