This bakery has amazing pastries. Best to go early, they have a better choice and different Verity of Breads.
The pastries are delicious and unusual. My favorite is the chocolate hat. Service is efficient and friendly.
Love this bakery! The only authentic Japanese bakery I can find in Sacramento. Japanese candy is usually less sweet than American candy (which I appreciate). Recommend both their hearty and sweet bakery! Savory: Pizza and Teriyaki Meatball Sweet: Strawberry Anko and each of her Maritozo
Sacramento and traditional Asian pastries go hand and hand, and this is exemplified by the enduring success of Mahoroba Japanese Bakery. Located in the South Land Park neighborhood on Freeport Boulevard in its own standalone building, Mahoroba Japanese Bakery has been delighting lovers of sweet baked goods in this area of central Sacramento for generations. In Japanese, the word Mahoroba is intended to mean good place or peaceful which is appropriate for a bakery that resembles a Japanese version of a donut shop, and this includes offering a number of savory baked good options. The Japanese community has long standing roots in the Sacramento region, and this goes beyond the atypical Japanese restaurants, which is exemplified by the longevity of Mahoroba Japanese Bakery. What brought me here on a weekend afternoon, was the fact that I was enjoying a lunchtime meal with extended family at a nearby restaurant, and as we were looking for our destination, what would happen to catch my eye but Mahoroba Japanese Bakery 's unique octagonal exterior, despite the fact that their storefront was located in a larger shopping center that also featured a Rite Aid, Mahoroba Japanese Bakery makes their presence known. I was intrigued and I instantly knew that this business had to have been a Sacramento legacy business.Upon entry to Mahoroba Japanese Bakery, one will immediately notice how compact everything is and how smart use of space they manage to utilize as they back everything on site as well. Since the weather outside was seriously chilly, it made many of the glass cases inside Mahoroba Japanese Bakery over-condensed in fog. The only menu that they actually have on site is one that features a run-down of the drinks they serve, and although many of their more savory options, such as their Hot Dog Buns, Chicken Teriyaki Meatball Pastry, and Bacon Egg Pastry were labeled, what I came for was their Sweet Pastries, as they are authentically Japanese to their core. After asking their sales associate what options were available to me, I opted to order five of their signature pastries including their Anpanman Choco; three of their Maritozzos, one with a Chocolate Custard Cream filling, one with a Kobe Custard Cream filling, and one with a Sweet Cream Cheese filling; and I decided to order of their Red Bean Sweet Pastries called An Pan. My total bill was $14.60 before gratuity was added in, and there was one thing that I do wish that Mahoroba Japanese Bakery considers adding to the payment process is that consider upgrading their payment reader to a tablet, as they still had a traditional credit card reader where adding in an additional payment isn 't possible, so I believe that they are leaving a lot of money on the table, especially for their hard working staff.Everything is bagged in a rather plain brown paper bag, and I decided to take my five treats home to look through my purchases and see which ones I wanted to devour first. I decided to go with one of the Maritozzo, as one of them had a sugar coated crust on it, and so I knew it wouldn 't last long. Of those three options, my favorite was definitely their Sweet Cream Cheese pastry as it reminded me of the traditional Chinese baked goods that have a similar filling, but topped with a coconut crust. Either way all of Mahoroba Japanese Bakery 's baked goods are wonderful, especially when ever so slightly heated up, preferably by a toaster oven to give your sweet rolls that extra warmth. Their red bean paste pastry is a little more savory than the other options that I ordered, and I opted to have their Anpanman Choco, which turns out I probably should have eaten first as it wasn 't as fresh as the others were, as I waited too long to enjoy it. Ordering baked goods, both sweet and savory, at Mahoroba Japanese Bakery is a local tradition in Sacramento, and as long as they keep making them as wonderful for as long as they have and selling them for such remarkably low prices for so many years, then Mahoroba Japanese Bakery isn
