Auberge De La Grande Charnie

We spent a lovely evening here after leaving the autoroute in order to find somewhere to eat on our way to Laval. We arrived at about 8.45pm on Saturday evening, and although the chef/ proprietor, Lionel, advised that he had just closed the kitchen, he said he would still cook for us! He told us what we could have, we agreed and he showed us to our table. Our starter was sliced tomatoes, grown in Lionel's garden, several different varieties, with sliced mozzarella cheese. Main course was chicken skewers with tagliatelli local chicken from Loue, wonderfully tender with a hint of tarragon. Dessert was homemade pear tart, and of course the pears came from the garden. We got chatting after the coffee, had a taste of a homemade liqueur made from greengages...you've guessed, from the garden! and wished we could have stayed longer. Thank you Lionel for your kindness on our last evening in France. We will come back to see you when we are passing your way again ... We might even make a detour, and we will try not to arrive so late next time!!

We went to La Grande Charnie for lunch while travelling for business in the region. The daily lunch was well balanced with 3 options for 1st course and the same for the main course. Service was swift and friendly from the lady running the business. The dining room may look a bit old fashioned but it fits perfectly in the regional style. Wine choice is large and prices are fair.

We have eaten here maybe 30+ times, so naturally we're fans. The food is usually very good, and under the new ownership the desserts have got even better! Service is friendly and not too formal we like that. The menus have a seasonal twist, and the autumn and winter menus are particular favourites. The least expensive menu is the same quality as the others presumably because the ingredients are less expensive. Not the most beautiful building in the village, and not the most beautiful village in Sarthe, but don't let that put you off. Would be nice if they were open for more evenings!

I put 3 stars because that's not what I'm looking for as a road... Service a little slow and plate not enough to taste.
