The beans were obviously made in house the old fashioned way with molasses and salt pork. The order consists of 2 large fish cakes and about 1 cup of beans -- a substantial lunch for $8.95 plus tax and tip.
My husband and i were driving around St John late in the evening looking for a place to eat and just as we were turning around we spotted Roy's Seafood and Grill. It is a small diner in a small plaza, and hardly noticeable but we were pleasantly surprised. Roy, the owner and cook served up some fresh homemade fries, a really creamy great tasting chowder and best of all were the scallops. We were pleasantly surprised by the amount and size of the scallops. The place is clean and the prices were reasonable. One has to overlook the plastic cutlery and the fast food baskets because the food, the prices, and friendly service makes up for it. Roy, told us some of the history of the area and how he got started. As Ontario travellers looking for some East Coast Seafood i would have to say Roy's was a highlight for us.
Plastic cutlery, meals are served in a take out containers. Dishes are overloaded with fries and not seafood.
I have visited Roy's quite a few times. Fresh cut fries, yummy seafood, creamy coleslaw, flavourful chowder, and all for a good price. I have had their fish and chips, chowder, lobster roll, and scallops and fries. The scallops are my favourite, but there is lots of love in this restaurant. The owner is responsive to customers likes and dislikes and shows pride over his clean kitchen. Often, he has given us a peek at his shiny deep fryers, telling us how often the oil is changed and what recent improvements he's made to the menu. Next, I'm going to try their burgers, which are always on special. He uses a local butcher, supporting another local, small business, which is just another reason to go visit Roy's!
My favorite restaurant in Saint John is a must-visit for their delicious spinach dip. Their menu also features fantastic burgers, fish tacos, and appetizers. The food here is top-notch!
