I want to write this second review because it is since a while I've been experimenting other Japanese restaurants especially in Milan downtown. But RAN still stands up hardly overtaken by other much more mentioned and quoted places. I came here several times in the past year and it's been getting better and better anytime. Fresh fish, thick and juicy, hefty portions, nice people, good service. Let's say you feel good when you take your way back home and already craving for another ran to RAN. The last time I came for lunch and I got a huge sushi selection...amazing! The quality of the food was superb, and what's more, as usual, the price is balanced. RAN is definitely worth every penny you pay for!!
1st time I was really surprised, quality and even portion size for the price was great. This time, the complete opposite. The fish didn't seem as fresh as it should be, very small portions, and the other persons meal also below par. When a restaurant goes from one extreme to the other, you have to wonder!
I have eaten in nearly all the Japanese restaurants in Lombardy, and they vary greatly, even by the day depending on the quality of the fish! Lunch set menus are generally very similar, and prices are roughly the same. Of late the prices have come down a little as competition has set in, but therefore so has the quantity and the quality! I went to RAN due to some colleagues mentioning it, so as I was in the area I popped in for lunch. Location of the restaurant isn't great, and the decor not overwhelming, but I have to say I was happily surprised at the portion size of the fish, the quality, particularly at the price! In hoping it wasn't a one off I will go back, and looking forward to it. By the number of positive reviews I am sure that I will be.
I'm usually very picky about japanese food, and I can say RAN goes beyond the expectations!! I went with friends last Thursday night, the place wasn't crowded, but it was heavy raining. The ambiance is fair enough, nice soft theme music, maybe the furniture isn't up to some competitors ... but when it comes to the food, well, RAN stands up for quality! I got a maguro sashimi and the tuna hefty portion was as tender as butter. Then I got a spicy tuna roll, and once again was mouthwatering, thick, savoy and well prepared. Eventually, I got a selection of 4 nigiri: tako, amaebi, maguro and suzuki. And here comes the best: huge nigiri, the sushi was thick and perfectly holding the upper slice of fresh raw fish. Very close to real Japan! The only think I may complain is that they don't directly spread wasabi underneath the fish (but they give you that on the side, like any other restaurant in Italy). Very kind and welcoming staff. Advice for the restaurant: care a little more about the look and provide reusable chopsticks instead of those average wooden ones. Recommended for any circumstance.
