Golden Star Cafe - San Antonio

Delicious Chinese cuisine, but I especially love their hot fried fish!

Like many locals in San Antonio, my family has been visiting this restaurant since the 1970s when it was open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. I’ve traveled all over the U.S., but only Golden Star knows how to make chop suey the right way! I had their egg drop soup, chicken chop suey, and a side of hot fish and fries. Everything tasted just like I remember—truly awesome!

My family has been dining at this restaurant for at least five generations. The service has consistently been friendly and efficient, and the food is always served hot and satisfying. The staff remembers various members of my family with each visit. While the restaurant is located on a less-than-ideal street (there are still some wandering vagrants in the vicinity), Golden Star has secured their parking lot with sturdy iron fences. However, the perceived safety of the neighborhood does not affect the quality of their service or food. During our last visit with my family, we ordered several extras along with the lunch specials. Overall, for three adults, our bill came to around $50 (plus tip). We had so much leftover food that we didn’t even need to prepare dinner that night! Thank you, Golden Star, for always being there to help us celebrate our family’s milestones and memories. Here’s to many more years together!

First time here and it was really good and hot. I love it will come back again

My dad would stop by Golden Star, many many years ago, and would bring the food home. As kids we love and still love the fried fish. Dad would order the sweet and sour pork. I come back for the fish time and time again but the sweet and sour pork has not sustained it’s flavor, freshness or consistency. Over breaded pork now and the sauce is not like the awesome sauce it used to be. No pineapple or bell peppers which enhance the flavor. Very disappointed in it. But can’t go wrong with the fried fish!!! Still, thanks for the memories.
