It had been a while since I had visited The Trails before this experience. Previously, it was a cozy family-run restaurant with a pleasant atmosphere and a friendly waitress who would take your order at your table. However, the current setup requires customers to place and pay for their orders upon entering the restaurant, with the menu located on a table by the door. This new system felt impersonal and confusing, especially when needing refills or additional items. It was unclear who to ask for assistance. Wait staff were only seen when delivering dishes or drinks to customers. A gentleman cleaning tables also seemed to be serving. Additionally, the front door was left open during our visit, allowing flies to buzz around the dining area. Overall, I am unsure if I would return to The Trails anytime soon. I prefer a more traditional diner setting over the current setup.
The food arrived quickly and was hot and delicious. The eggs and pancakes were particularly good. I felt that the home fries could have been more seasoned, and the iced vanilla latte could have been more flavorful. The prices were a bit high for the portion sizes, but overall we were happy with our experience and will return because of the friendly service and convenience.
Please note that this restaurant requires customers to stand in line outside, place their order, and then be seated. It is expected that tips be given in advance of the meal and service if paying by card. I visited this establishment with a group of seven for breakfast. The food was served as it was ready, resulting in some guests sitting with their meals while others waited for up to 6 minutes. This created an awkward and potentially rude atmosphere. The food arrived quickly, but there was not much time to relax and enjoy coffee. If you are looking for a fast food experience, this restaurant is great. However, if you prefer a more leisurely dining experience, it may not be the best choice. The food was average, neither bad nor exceptional. The home fries and hash browns were satisfactory.
Love their cinnamon pancakes. Share as a dessert can be sweet if that's all you are eating but it is like a Cinnabon pancake.Food is good and service is good as well.Nice family spot.Food: 4/5
My local friends suggested we eat here during SD Pride weekend (Sun. July 16th) and I’m glad we did!! I had the most amazing “Piggy Back Bene” ever!! The pork, egg and covered in a delicious Chipotle Hollandaise that I literally was licking the sauce off the plate with my fingers. Now, I know why he line was stretched out the door!! It took us 30 mins to get a table, always remember if there is a line to enter a restaurant, there’s a good reason why! I want to thank Nick and Michael for inviting us here and paying for our breakfast! FIVE CLAWS UP!!!!! A Must Go. Thanks for reading my review of The Trails Eatery in San Diego. Joe G. Bear
