However, Shuei Do is an exception and delivers them exceptionally well. Manju is naturally vegan friendly, offering a variety of filling options from azuki red beans to matcha. Customers can choose a few for $2 each to fill a tray, which will be ready in less than 10 minutes. The manju we ordered were divine, incredibly fluffy and fresher than those found in the market. A sprinkle of powdered sugar on top added to their appeal. Japanese desserts are not typically very sweet, but are still delicious. If you have the time, it's definitely worth the wait to enjoy fresh manju at Shuei Do in Japantown.
This San Jose restaurant has the best mochi in town. With about 25 options to choose from, it's the perfect place to try this traditional treat for the first time. I suggest starting with the Habutai and Green Tea flavors, which are considered the most traditional varieties. Alternatively, you can opt for a variety pack like we did on our first visit. Be sure to call ahead at least a day in advance to place your order. You can find their menu on their Instagram and Facebook Page. Get ready to become addicted to their delicious mochi!
