San Juan Smokehouse

Vegetarians and vegans often struggle to find restaurants that cater to their dietary needs, but this place was conveniently located on the main strip and bustling with activity even during the day (La Placita is better suited for millennials at night). The lively music and dancing outside added to the overall dining experience.

The staff at this restaurant is outstanding, but be prepared for a wait. The vegan choices are excellent, so I recommend arriving early to ensure that nothing is out of stock.

We ordered a variety of dishes including avocado jackfruit, brisket appetizer, mac and cheese, and smashed potatoes. The standout dish was the coleslaw, which was served under the avocado. I recommend ordering a side of it. The mac and cheese and smashed potatoes were delicious, and my son enjoyed them as well. I would suggest adding a little salt and pepper to the potatoes next time. The avocado was fresh and large, adding a nice touch to the meal. My son and I weren't big fans of the brisket (good flavor but too chewy for me), but my husband loved it. Overall, the food was good but not amazing. It didn't leave a lasting impression on me during my vacation. However, it's still worth a try if you enjoy BBQ.

Loving this place! I wish I would have come here early in my trip. The food is very good. Lots of vegan comfort foods. I tried the jackfruit sliders . Worth checking out if you’re in the area and are with non-vegan friends. They were out of the brisket so I got the ribs. They were simply not my thing. I took a few bites and ended up bring the rest home (which I later tossed). The mac n chz was decent but dry. It’s in a party area of SJ. I may have been too sober for that, haha.
