While on a tour of the Christmas Markets in December we spent two nights in Schweinfurt. One of these nights we had the pleasure of dining at Buon Gusto. Four of us were in our party and all had excellent meals. I wish I could remember the name of Italian dish I had (believe it was the bolognese noodle roll) as it was outstanding. For wine we had a bottle of Montepulciano D Abruzzo which complemeted our dinner quite well. Claudia, who I believe to be the owner, stopped and visited with us multiple times and was a very enjoyable person. Nice atmosphere, great food, good wine, friendly staff.....priceless.
I love this restaurant, I have made sure to eat there several times during my last 2 vacations. The owner is eccentric, such as not having coca cola or other name brand soft drinks in his restaurant but I have always been treated very well.I love the noodle roll (which I would not call cannelloni, it is a unique creation) either in bolognese or vegetarian. You get 2 rolls (which are quite large) and you can mix flavours.I also love the pizza, but it is not to everyones taste. It is generally one or 2 toppings, very sparse, but the crust is phenomenal and the sauce is delicious. However, it is the dessert that really stands out. Strawberry tiramisu (sounds odd, but the taste was exquisite), best panna cotta I have ever had and a decadent traditional tiramisu. I have never been disappointed with any of my meals, however, I have never had a meat dish (rabbit, steak, etc) so I cannot comment on those.
On our way to Buon Gusto we passed by the two best Italian restaurants in Schweinfurt. Both were full. Boun Gusto was empty. Inside, the up-scale look made a good initial impression. To our surprise, the menu described the Italian dishes in German, rather than calling them by their Italian names. Why not call a cannelloni a cannelloni, rather than a stuffed noodle roll? Our waiter has been serving a loyal Schweinfurt clientele in other restaurants for over a decade. He has a well deserved following based on his ever-pleasant disposition, flawless wine knowledge and excellent service. His presence brought us there. Unfortunately, little else pleased us. My wife and I shared a very good antipasti. I had the rabbit. It is not my favorite dish, but since my wife ordered the Pork Filet, there was no other Italian Entrée. My wife ordered an open red wine and sent it back as unacceptable. The replacement glass of a more expensive wine was no better than ordinary. We had somewhat better luck with the food. Both meals had a nice taste, but the meats were either tough to start with, or were over-cooked. Based on the good taste of the antipasti and the entree, I believe that the chef got the cooking time right. I suspect that the problem with this restaurant is the ownership. Both owners were there, but performed unimportant tasks. No one, other than the waiter came to our table to see if we were pleased, or if everything was satisfactory. To me, this is the most important job of the owner, not slicing bread. We shall not return to Boun Gusto. There are far better Italian restaurants in town that charge significantly less, give you larger portions, have a larger menu selection, a friendlier atmosphere and care if you are satisfied.
